Turbo Question

Featured Replies

Hi all, as many know the Yeti is having a turbo upgrade but I've hit a little snag. Shark Performamnce can't fit me in until the end of January for the install and mapping, i may have a solution to get things done sooner but there comes the question.

I have the offer of my Uncles garage (Rushworths Autos) fitting the turbo tomorrow meaning id need less of Sharks time and could hopefully get the mapping done sooner. Would driving around with the upgraded turbo for a few days before mapping be OK or does it all need going together?

Thanks in advance once again :)

Ok.

Will it work?              It could.

Will It work well?      Unlikely.

Will it be worse?      Probably.

What have you gained?

I would be as excited as you obviously are, but not prepared to take the risk of running an unknown/unbalanced system for that amount of time.

If we get the winter promised, or any other hiccough, you could be driving around even longer....

Or not driving if something drastic goes wrong with the install.

Shark are a very professional company, so they may feel the need to check everything has been done correctly.  This could take as long as doing the job in the first place.  Especially if they find something wrong.

Have you spoken to Ben about this btw?.

I think he's meaning if he fits turbo himself Shark may be able to fit him in sooner if it's just to map.

You could be right.

He still is needing to drive it around though.

Im no expert, but id assume itd just not make much extra power?

Woulda thought itd run okay?

It would be professionally installed at the garage mentioned but Ben at Shark thinks the mapping would only take a couple of hours, the turbo swop about 4.

So the thinking was if I can do the install as close to an available slot as I can (probably day before) drive over to Shark (2hr run) then get the mapping done.

I would have thought it would run on the stage1 mapping but possibly have a bit more lag.

What turbo are you putting in?

I'm no mechanic and can't give you any advice but end of January is only around month away.

I saved and waited for all my mods to be fitted over 7 months, it was worth it as it was done professionally and in one go, all adjusted and corrected at the same time.

Highly unlikely, but things could go wrong once your new turbo is fitted and this could cause even bigger issues with something else.

Be patient and get it done by professionals who know what and how to do it...:)

Patience is the key here and it will be worth it...!!!

Looking forward to seeing the update re the Turbo in your project

Think your right, to many question marks for me to be comfortable with it, car runs so great now and I don't want to jeopardise that.

Any reason you never run the question passed the professionals that would be fitting the Turbo or Shark that would then be remapping?

What is the rush for more go presently, do you need to be getting it quicker so quickly?

I had some time off work so was hoping to get it done in that window, purely practical reasons :)

I did run it past the professionals, i was wondering if anyone had run an uprated turbo before mapping and their experience, general consensus was it would be OK but nobody could say how it would run with any confidence.

Probably because it is not the best of ideas to do it that way,

and most will not have tried it that way.

As long as the turbo is correctly setup with the actuator and stop screw then it will be fine if driven sensibly. Correctly setup turbo ensures theirs no crazy overboost.

If you have VCDS then log boost again requested.

Example. A correctly setup gtb2260vk runs perfectly fine and safe on a standard pd130 map. If the actuator is too short then you can see overboost when coming on boost.

Might sound silly, but what happens when it overboosts?

Will it cause it to run lean?

Depending by how much could be it runs outside the turbo compressor map and the tip speed of the compressor running too fast. Excess use of the compressor wheel running too fast can lead to it failing.

Diesels are not as sensitive to AFR ratio like patrols.. Yes it will run learning but that's no issue.

Just happened across this thread.. I think the mapping would take more than a couple of hours given that we usually take longer than that on a Stage 1 dyno tune!

Just spoke to Matt, didn't realise you needed it for a week!! I'm sorting a hire car so I can leave it with you for a week at the end of January.

I misread on the quote the time needed for mapping, my bad :)

Thats that then (: aha.
