I need to replace a damaged wheel. I haven't yet found a good scrap replacement so wondered if a wheel from a similar vehicle would be compatible (Polo or Seat Ibiza possibly). Can anybody advise what might be compatible and how I can tell?

Assuming from your user name that you drive a fabia which has a 5x100 stud pattern, then yes, wheels from other VAG brands will fit if they are the same stud pattern.

Next up you need to consider the offset of the wheels. The lower the offset number (preceeded by the letters ET) the further out towards the edge of the arch your wheels will sit.

To give you an example. My Roomster standard wheels are ET50 and fill the arches as below. Slightly 'tucked' inside the arch.

Whereas my winter rims have an offset of ET42 and therefore 'poke' out 8mm more than the standard rims.
