Ok, I confess, I'm John, and I'm a Yeti addict! 

 

I've been contributing to the forum since May 2010 and like many early Snow Monster owners I was initially asking lots of questions as I tried to learn more than was clear from the Yeti handbook (which is still an unnecessarily badly written and over complicated  publication).

Quite quickly, I found myself appreciating the banter which was almost exclusively well meaning and which added a light and friendly feeling to the forum. It became a bit like a widely distributed club of like minded folk.

I soon found that I had useful information to add and was able to contribute to answering many of the questions posed by others.

 

As time went on, I found that the same questions were often being repeated so others were able to point the enquirer to the previous answer, and when my wife's sudden health issues came to the fore, my available time was in short supply and I drifted away from the forum.

Her health now improved, I've been able to dip into the forum again from time to time and it's good to see there are still several useful threads appearing. However, it is clear that the tone of some posts has been less than helpful.

 

So come on guys (and gals if appropriate) please appreciate that not everyone has been on here for long enough to understand your individual sense of humour. Whilst a blunt reply is sometimes what you feel like writing, try to couch your response in the same way that you would when meeting a stranger face to face for the first time. ie with a bit of common courtesy and politeness.

 

This is  a great forum, almost exclusively devoid of the modern "text speak" and bad language that has become so prevalent elsewhere. Contributors are almost always genuinely trying to be helpful (even occasionally giving grammatical assistance) so if you read something that seems a bit prickly - don't over react, just raise an eyebrow and move on.

 

The world is a big place - there's room for all of us! (And I trust that the aggrieved will quickly return and continue to add their knowledge to this valuable facility).

Do be honest I did feel a little jumped on when I first began to post in the Yeti section, my reaction to that may have been overly defensive but I can relate to a non welcoming "what you doing in here" kind of reception.

I've cracked on with my Yeti project and found some great help in other parts of the forum, every now and then popping in here but rarely posting.

My advice to the old guard would be to remember that the Yeti section is not an exclusive boys club, we're all coming from different demographics and here for different reasons.

I suppose as the Yeti ages, there will be less posters and not as many issues to talk about, but we all need to ensure sites like this survive and help each other with problems, modifications etc,

I think the opposite will happen.

 

As the Yeti ages, not only will there be more on the road in total, and therefore more owners, but as ages & mileages increase, it's likely that more faults will emerge - and with more older cars out of warranty, more people looking for ways to fix them without going to a dealer.

 

That's how I've found things pan out on other forums anyway.

I'm already in the Corner

People come and people go.

When the site was founded we, I, didn't think it would go much past 200 and never 1000.

People around October 02 are no longer posting. Occasionally logging in, which is good to see.

A key thing to remember is a forum is made up of many forums. So posting in only one forum may look like a figure is a loss, but overall there is plenty going on.

Growth is a tricky one. On one hand it's good to get new people in; in reality for a car, people are here for a few years then tempted to another marque and so move on. But growth brings differences, not just from the uk. We see people from over 80 countries. The forum(s) does not exist for one person, it exists for two people; or more, to share, discuss and debate.

Skoda appeals for a number of reasons across so many demographics, I say 17 to 70+. That by it's nature will bring in a massive range of views and you know what... no, what?

 

We don't all agree with each other.   

This time of year we do see and have done every year a rise in unhappiness, keyboard warriors and a rise in anti-establishment comments; the briskoda police. If I told you 80% of our moderation work is around styling and car care these last two months it might show that actually most of the time, most of the forums fora are unmoderated. Shock we're all old enough to be respectful, if not then I'm buying a flat pack house and shipping out.

Sure there are some cases which do go to far, we all react. Many a day I've walked away cursing my own rules and wishing I could just delete somebody for being a eejit; or calling me hitler. But I don't I respect them for their flawed views. My preference will go to those supporting the site either by volunteering, posting or through freedom. But it's not a shield to fend off anyone who's views does not match said views.

 

My stall is inclusion, can't help those outside the walls. They may cause havoc inside, but this is good, to a point. The point since we left the trees, we've been arguing, if not we'd have all believed in one single thing and have left this rock moons ago... and back in the room...When it's clear good has failed...  

Lets finish on a high... I'd like world peace, failing that, to wake up and say morning to my loved ones and remember those who I can't say hello too.
