Irritating rattle in neutral

Featured Replies

This noise has been driving me up the wall recently - you can hear it only in neutral with your foot off the clutch (i.e. engaged), when you press the clutch it dissappears completely, also, if you lift the clutch up really slowly or 'pump' it a few times, the noise becomes less noticeable. It is more pronounced from the interior of the vehicle and sounds like its coming from the passenger side.

Sound clip here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qn133bwg17b0epn/Video%2022-12-2014%2012%2023%2052.mov?dl=0  ... at 0:33 I put my foot on the clutch and you can hear the sound go away, it comes back again as soon as I lift my foot of the clutch but it's not quite as loud as in the start of the video since I lifted it really slowly

Any ideas on what is causing this noise would be really appreciated! I've been told numerous things such as dogbone mount, flywheels etc. Clutch only has about 10k on it and is OEM and the gearbox is reconditioned

Cheers :)

Also noticed today that you can get the noise to dissappear by increasing the revs slightly at idle

Hmmm, I didn't think the 1.4s had dual mass flywheels, so its probably not that (if what I've seen is right).

Correct, no DMF on the 1.4TDIs. Symptoms all sound very similar though haha

Do you mean a rattle in the cabin?my dash and both doors rattle, not to mention the occasional chatter from the smf.

You can hear it outside as well but it seems louder inside probably because of the lack of background noise.

Try this.

When sitting stationary in neutral, don't press any pedals but slightly push the gear leaver into all the gears.

You will feel a grind if you push to hard but when doing it listen for any changes in noise.

That's interesting. Pushing the gear lever gently into any of the gears (not engaging them) makes the noise go away!

Gearbox is knackerd mate, hopefully it's under warranty if it's recond.

It has a 12k warranty, only had it done about 3-4k ago. It used to always make that noise but I've just noticed it more pronounced. I did ask the guys who did the recon and they said its the reverse idler gear? Out of interest, why does it go away when I push the gear lever?

In simple terms, your taking up the slack and stopping gear teeth chattering.

I don't know much els I'm afraid, my skills in gearboxes only goes enough to narrow down the fault, I don't repair them myself.

Cheers, looks like another visit to the garage :(

Yep, take it back to whoever recond it.

Strange how they do acknowledge the fault being within the gearbox, but don't offer to repair it?

Has the oil been checked or replaced since the gearbox has been done?

They may have put the wrong stuff in or possibly none at all?

Would know about it if there was no oil, would've seized after about 50 miles. Ask me how I know lol

They said you'd never get rid of all noises without getting a completely new gearbox and it will be ok!

The oil was changed when the gearbox was refurbed, according to the invoice, semi-synthetic oil was used, I understand it should really be fully synthetic?

Apart from that, the invoice details 'Renew all bearings and re-shim' I get the renew bit but have no clue what re-shim is. They fitted a new 5th gear set supplied by myself but that was from Darkside and is more of performance upgrade than anything else.

I will take it back after Christmas, however, it is a massive hassle as I have moved house and rely on my car for work, plus if I do end up having to pay for anything, it's not an ideal time just after Christmas and with a holiday planned.

There were the guys that did it: http://www.gearboxnottingham.co.uk/  they were friendly and had lots of posh cars there too, mainly DSG boxes though

bull**** take it back def not right and if they argue threaten them with trading standards

Ran a gearbox with no oil, blew up after 50 miles.

My TDi Fabia has done similar for about 7 years.. it's nothing to worry about.. it's just the plate vibrating a bit when the clutch is not depressed..
