Wheel "Rotation"

Featured Replies

Not a Pun....
Booked my Superb in for an oil change, one year old in January and sked for a price to to rotate the wheels from front to back. The receptionist said the mechanic advised it does not need doing and should be left as the wheels"settle" into their position. I did mention that the hand book advises to do this and the reply was "oh if the hand book says so then we can do it for a fee". We agreed £30 for labour. I know I am being lazy and could do this for myself but without axle stands it is a bit of a faff.

What are your views on rotating the wheels to even out thre ware?

And a Ho Ho merry Christmas to you all and thank you for the advice and banter that has been posted this year.

Make sure it's done front to back, back to front same side not corner to corner. the tyres swopped corner to corner will rotate backwards. Tyres get into a wear pattern. It's best they rotate the same way

Don't let the garage tell you otherwise

I swap my car's wheels back to front and front to back to ensure that the set all need replacing at the same time.  This enables me to change to a different tyre, if I wish, and still have all four tyres the same brand, 'model' and tread pattern.

It depends whether you intend keeping to the same tyres or not. SWMBO Seat has Bridgestones on it which I'm happy with so I didn't bother swapping them round as I knew I'd be keeping the car so the fronts got changed at 30k and its since had a full set at 60k.

I'm not exactly over the moon with my OE Contis so have swapped them at 12k as the fronts are down to just below 4mm while the rears still have between 5 & 6mm left so I can put a full set on around 20k when they should all be about ready for the bin.

For those who plan to change their cars in the next couple of years It's worth considering when you will be changing your car and if this is likely to be after a full set would be required but in between changing the fronts and rears seperately as that could cost or save you the expense of 2 new tyres depending on your circumstances and which option you choose.

Like Philbes above I always rotate to keep the wear as even as possible so that I have the flexibility to change brand and change them all together. With the lower profile 18s I'm only getting 30/35k kms from a set so it should work out that I either change them or rotate them at each service.

If the "Oil change" is actually a service, then they have to take the wheels off anyway to inspect the brakes etc. so there shouldn't be any fee to rotate the wheels as the only additional labour is to carry the front wheel to the rear of the car and vice-versa.

Regardless of whether the wheels had to come off, if a dealer even attempted to charge me for rotating wheels it would be the last time they would see me!!

Thanks lads, some room for negotiating I think.

The service is not due as I think it is on long service ( must check ) I thought being a new car the least I should do is an oil change at year one.

It is not neccessary to remove the wheels to check the brakes.
