couple of wax questions

Featured Replies

I have just picked up some Aura obsession wax, what's the best applicator to use and how much should I be using.

2nd question.

I have just been given a large challenge(argos special) rotary polisher. Is this best to use just to buff off the above wax.

I am totally new to detailing and previous cleans have been snow foam, megs gold shampoo and then megs tech wax.

Any pointers would be great

Steve

Hi Steve.

Firstly a foam applicator pad is all you will need

Apply very thinly and when hazed buff off with a soft microfibre cloth

As regard the rotary polisher....can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing ...buffing off with one is not what they're for

They are for polishing...wax should always be buffed off by hand

Do you have polish? Polishing pads?

The polisher you've got isn't a fire breathing dragon. So don't worry. It will be fine for applying Autoglym Super resin polish and such like.

As for wax application, as Chris says, but be aware, some you can leave on for a long time and remove at your leisure, and some you need to remove after a couple of mins and they cure quickly and can be a pain to buff off. Best to follow the instructions on the pot buddy.

Enjoy!!

Thanks for the swift replies, I will get a few foam applicators then.

Excuse my ignorance but whats the difference between polishing and waxing

The rotary has two wool buffers, one is labelled finishing and the other application.

Polishing is using abrasives to remove scratches and swirl marks.

Products like super resin polish and megs Nxt wax aren't polishes or waxes, they are All-in-one products. They clean the paintwork and put down a little bit of protection while filling in the fine swirl marks.

Your polisher is not powerful enough to use polishes, but is fine for all-in-one products. You can use it to remove the residues, but it's better to do by hand IMO.

Wax is used to protect the paint and can also fill in swirl marks and minor defects. They will go over the all-in-one products fine in most cases.

Because of marketing, it becomes very confusing! I'm sure some of the other guys will expand more on this. But this is my take on it.

Assuming the "rotary buffer" referenced is one of these....

If that is the case you are pretty safe in this instance. You can't cause any damage with this really.

You could also use it to buff the wax off, but I personally wouldn't. It's ok for a light polish/glaze run.

I have seen people get effective results with these when starting out.... but not the best tool to use really.

Good luck with your detailing; be sure and post up results and some pics.

Ah right. I will use it with the all in one but do the aura wax by hand.
