Poor cold starting

Recommended Posts

Hi all, my 2006 1.9 TDi is getting very hard to start on cold mornings. Turn on wait 3-5 secs car starts then stops, starts agian then stops, 22 times this morning then starts runs then all is fine all day until left overnight/8+ hours. Changed heater/glow plugs no different, any ideas would be very helpfull

Welcome to the Forum.

For a simple one,

Have you changed the Inline Fuel Filter & sure its not got H20 in it. (icing up)

Maybe not be related but I had a similar problem.

I fitted new glow plugs

Checked the glow plugs were getting power

New battery

New fuel filter.

It turns out my injector seals are worn and allow fuel to run back to the fuel tank hence taking ages to start.

Might not be same for you but just a thought.

A diagnostic scan will often provide useful info, remember vagcom/vcds lite cables are available from fleabag for under £10.

Check glowplugs are actually receiving power, in case the relay or fuse is u/s.

As it actually starts and cuts out, its more likely either a fuelling issue (filter) or it could be a crankshaft or camshaft sensor issue, vcds/vagcom would help diagnosis.

As the mkII is CAN based VCDS Lite will only give you basic OBDII information, so may not be much use. Finding someone near you with full VCDS would be a better idea. Have a look at the thread with the list and map in the diagnostics forum on here.
