Golf R - In for repair :(

Interesting!

I guess this depends on which audi/skoda/vw dealer you use though?

Always going to get better / worse dealers in each network.

Bizarrely the VW and Audi dealers I have used are part of the same franchise & next door to each other. On quality of service they couldn't be further apart.

It's ready!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got the call to pick her up today. Been 3 x weeks without my R :(

Let's hope they have actually fixed it, & worth thr wait.

Is it a manual or DSG?

Hope the box has now started to settle in okay for you.

Have you broken it yet??

Go on! smash it!

I have to be honest, the DSG is a bit of a clunker in anything other than full attack mode. It jerks into gear, jerks into reverse, the hill start function is all a bit brutal feeling, so lord knows how long it's going to last!

999pooch,

So how good was the repair and how is the motor going now?

Sorry, not been about for a couple of days :)

So got the car back & mixed results.

There's a definite improvement, and once the car is warm the changes are much smoother. However depending on engine speed when you change gear (mainly around 2.5k revs on 1-2 gear change) it can be a bit notchy still.

I have found though a slight workaround, and for pootling around town it works for me, and that is using a 1-3 gear change. This is a very smooth change & the car pulls verys well & reduces a gear change in the process. When I need to press on then the 1-2 gear change is made at a higher engine speed anyway so changes much smoother anyway.

For me I'm going to leave it at this. I'm happy that the repair has improved the situation to a point that is acceptable, and the above workaround virtually eliminates any notchiness on a day to day basis. That and the fact I lost my car for nearly a month during this repair doesn't warrant any further resource from me.

Glad you're happy

But of a PITA though. You should be able to go through the box without issue.

So basically the repair is a 'Fail',  and Volkswagen should get a Master Tech or Factory Technician out to drive the car,

or get it into a Specialist to be properly examined and a Replacement Gearbox Installed.

Then they can have all the time they want to be sure that such newly released cars will be correctly repaired in the future if there are Warrnaty Claims.

VORSPRUNG DURCH TECHNIK.

Trying to be the biggest manufacturers in the world, but hardly better than 'Kerb Side Autos!'

Sorry to hear that you are not 100% happy with the repair route chosen by your dealer.

I must admit that I would have been inclined to request a new box, for such "premium" motor. I would not be prepared to route around the problem, which is still an irritation and not up to the "Best" /expected high standard of operation ,for this or for that matter any other motor.

Hope you can get it fully sorted soon, as I can only see it deteriorating and not improving.

Is it a common problem amoungst the r's?

A few on VWROC have commented on the notchy 1-2 gear change.

Cheers Kieth. I'm going to run it a few more days before making a decision on what to do. :)

Are you going to contact VW UKCS and see if they are having warranty issues developing a history globally on this .(In writing-email and a phone call)

You could then raise a Case No. on the record outlining the dealer work carried out recently against your VIN No.

Sorry to hear this repair has been less than perfect. I think I'd be still wanting more to be done to sort it. Having to drive around always skipping out 2nd and going first to third isn't acceptable in my view.

999pooch,

How are things with your R box now?

Any action plans or are you just living with it until the RS3 replacement arrives?

I'm currently sat looking at the sea from the balcony of our hotel in Tenerife, big blue skies, about 25C and not a care in world. Looks like it's going to be a scorcher today :)

As you can tell the gearbox isn't high priority this week :D

But in all seriousness, the R is locked up in a long term car park back home in Blighty, and the gearbox in the few miles I've done since the repair does seem to have improved. When the car is warm, it doesn't have any symptoms. It's just when cold it can have a notchy change between 1-2.

I think I can live with it for another 18months, maybe can't, it all depends on whether it gets in my t1ts over the next few weeks. Some things that are small annoy you over time, others don't. Time will tell.

Think I might just have a cheeky glass of champers with my brekkie :)
