New COLUMBUS trouble downloading .db3 safety cameras

Featured Replies

I have been struggling to download safety cameras to my new Columbus SatNav which seems to be related to the POInspector .db3 file format.

On my previous Superb which had an earlier model of Columbus this file format was OK but through searching other postings I have read that the .db3 file format is no longer acceptable to download for the latest model.

Just for the record my normal process is to download the safety cameras from PocketGPS World and upload them into POInspector. Next step is to transfer the database to a SD card in the correct format for downloading to Columbus. The other point to mention is that I create a folder on the SD card with the name PersonalPOI and give the file a name which I understand needs to be 9 characters or more which in my case I chose SafetyCameras.

If there is anybody who can throw any light on this issue I would be glad to know what alternatives are available.

Thanks for leading me to previous threads.

It looks like I may have a long day wading through but if it works I'll be very grateful.

No luck

I followed the translated instructions from the German website with regard to the VW RNS 510 and after many attempts I managed to download the UK safety camera details onto a SD card for uploading to Columbus. I tried a couple of different cards with 2.0 and 16GB and also a 32GB memory stick.

Columbus through Navigation/Settings/import destinations recognised my folder "PERSONALPOI" from the SD card and then the file "MyPOIcollection". When clicking on my file nothing happens and visually the import button was greyed out.

For information I downloaded the safety cameras from PGPSW and unzipped the file. The download I chose was " Other - ASC [ UK - Consolidated by type (Gatso,Mobile, etc) | pMobiles: Yes "  I chose this download to get the ASC format as opposed to the TomTom OV2 format used in the past.

I then followed the instructions for the VW website and downloaded individually the 5 different types of cameras together with Icons. I note that the file created by the VW process gave a .db3 file extension although I note that one of the other contributors on this topic advised in February of this year that the DB file is not recognised in the latest version Columbus and in fact he stated that the VW process creates a self extracting .exe file.

If you are able to identify where I am going wrong I will be very grateful as I have spent many hours without luck so far.

I will download some safety cams from PGPSW as I can't remember how to do it. Pretty certain I didn't have to do anything to import them, the Columbus recognised them as a map update.

Sounds like you were still using the format for the RNS 510 Columbus.

The MIB Columbus you have is called a Discover Pro in VW speak, you need to use the Discover Pro version of the database creator.

Below are a few screenshots, including what the final SD card should look like. Basically you end up with a zip file that you extract on to the root of the SD card.

Andy,

I don't think I am far off from being OK as most of the screenshots you provided look almost identicle to mine. I thought I was using the current VW site but I''l have to check to see if it was "discover pro"

It will be interesting to see how you got on with the "my destinations route".

I may not have any time before tomorrow evening to have another go by which time you may have another route for me.

Well, as per the farce with the map downloads, Skoda seem to have made a pigs ear of the PersonalPOI creator as well.

Imported .asc format and created everything - the Columbus starts to import them and then flags up an error about 'Invalid Data'. Used exactly the same source files and icons with the VW site and it all worked fine, using the large 44x44 PGPSW icons.

Andy,

Thanks for trying.

I'll have a go with the Discover Pro in case I did use the RNS 510 Columbus and, of course, I'll let you know how I get on.

Why is it we all have to go through the hoops including going to a German language website to download POI's which are almost a daily occurrence. I cannot understand why VW UK doesn't have an English version so we can download more easily.

Andy,

Still no luck !!

I did previously use the RNS 510 Columbus so I downloaded again onto Discover Pro making sure that my information was exactly the same as you posted.

Columbus recognises that I have data on the SD card but the message "Import all vCards from this folder" is greyed out and so is every subsequent screen on the system.

Below I have taken screen shots and also the structure on my SD Card in case you can spot a problem. The only difference I can see from your SD card structure is that under the folder PersonalPOI on the right hand side you have a file labelled "metainfo2" which is a text document whereas mine says "WMPInfo" which is shown as an XML document.. I didn't create that file but do you think it might be stopping the SD card from downloading into Columbus ?

The SD card is a newly bought ScanDisk Ultra showing 30MB/s and 10 with 16GB capacity.

If the screen shot of my SD card file structure is too small once I send this post I'll send it separately as a larger picture.

Your valuable help is always appreciated.

The SD card screenshot is too small so here it is again so we can read it properly.

The metainfo file needs to be there. Why are you trying to import destinations? You just go to settings, map, import personal POIs I thought.

I'll PM you later

I think you could be right !!

Last night I managed to translate the FAQ's on the Volkswagen Companion website and noticed they had a section on input of POI's so I was going to try today.

I'll try what you state first.

Job done !!!

At last I have succeeded in downloading the safety cameras using GPSW and VW Discover Pro.

I tried your last suggestion which seems to be part of the way in the process but I actually I followed the procedure outlined in the FAQ's on the Volkswagen Companion website which was very straightforward.  The step by step process I used was as follows:

1) Importing Safety Cameras POI's into Discover Pro

--------------------------------------------------------------------

- Insert the SD card containing the Safety Camera information into either of the card slots in the glove box.

- Press the hard key "Menu" on Columbus

- Select the option "Setup"

- Scroll down and select "System Information"

- Select "Update Software"

- The Discover pro device (Columbus) now displays "Software Update Checks". Select "Next" and the "OK" and "Now"

- The devise then reboots after which the POI package for Safety Cameras is available for selection in the Navigation map set up.

2) Displaying Safety Cameras on the map view in Columbus

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Import the POI package as described above.

- Press the hard key "NAV" on Columbus

- Select "Setup" button

- Select the option "Map"

- Select "Categories of POI's"

- Scroll down the POI choices and select individual safety camera choices "Gatso", "Mobile". "PMobile", "Redlight" and "Specs"

After all of this when I went to the map I was able to see the camera positions and also the relevant icons. Let's hope in due course we can tag voice messages to the camera positions.

Thanks for giving your time to my problem. Perhaps other forum members will be able to make use of my step by step process themselves if interested.

One other thing I noticed which may not have been their before was that when turning on Columbus the screen showed the current silver symbol for SKODA and underneath was shown Laurin & Klement in the same style as on the car itself.

The L&K logo on the Columbus will have been there before :)

Glad you got it sorted though - if you have a look in the map settings on the Columbus you will see options for deleting and updating your personal POIs

Somebody help please! Can anyone advise how I can get past Andy's screenshot 5. I seem to be doing everything right upto there (even using the same files from PGPSW) and the same naming convention, but when I click the "Jetzt Laden" button, the fields go blank and I get a message advising the session has timed out and that I should start a new session. Tried several times without success. Someone on the Golf forum stated that a "requester" button appears at the bottom left of screenshot 5 to save the your selections to a waiting list, but I haven't seen this (has anyone?).

I have tried the Skoda my-destinations route and it does produce the files but, like Andy said, it shows an error when updating the Columbus.

Dave, seen your PM, I'll take a look on Sunday.

Problem Solved. Thanks to Andyvee, I tried Chrome for the download. Pleased to say it worked where Firefox, IE and Safari for Windows all failed.

I have tried using the MyDestinations page to create a POI file for the Columbus on the New Superb (2016) from a gpx file.  It imports all the locations and shows them on the map on the web page, using the correct icon but when I try to save the file it doesn't allow you to specify the drive or folder and just produces a failure message saying it

Could not find file 'D:\home\site\wwwroot\POIs'

There is no D drive on my Mac.  Anyone managed to get this website to work?

Having rebuilt the the database on a PC, there is a popup along the bottom of the window that allows the file and path to be specified.  So this is a Mac thing and possibly a pop-up blocker that is at fault.  The car still claims there's a fault while loading the file - so the battle rages.

I thought I had the hang of this. My MIB1 just got swapped under warranty. I now carry out the procedure and unpack the zip file onto an SD Card. The PersonalPOI and the Metafile are created on the card. Now when I try it in the new MIB it does not recognise anything. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Thanks
