Access Database Builders?

Featured Replies

Any access wizards out there who fancy helping me out?

My work have spent loads of time building a massive spreadsheet (46MB at last count) to track aspects of my department's work.

It take around 45 seconds to open and can't be accessed by 2 people at the same time etc etc.

I suggested that it probably wasn't the best solution and a proper access database woul dbe a better solution.

I have a tiny bit of knowledge from 15 years ago when i did a computer science GCSE but am rusty to say the least.

Appreciate that this is probably a job taht my work should outsource and pay for but if anyone feel generous and could lend a hand it'd be appreciated

Thanks

Cliff

Personally these days I'd be looking at a SQL database these days rather than access as its more industry standard. Reporting is straightforward and can also integrate with other systems. Web forms can also be used to populate data etc.

Speaking from experience and whether you use SQL or Access or even the latter as a front end to the former this type of thing is usually a large task.

First thing you need to do is to work out your data model, so that means what information you need to record and how the various pieces of information relate. Then it is a case of managing the supply of data to the system and the various calculations etc involved in the system. There is also the reporting aspect.

If the spreadsheet is 46MB then that sounds like either a large amount of information to transfer or a pretty convoluted model to break down, ie either way non-trivial.

Hope that helps to start
