Start-up Noise

Featured Replies

Hi Guys & girls

had my vrs 2 weeks. Very pleased. Two questions:

1. Sounds like a diesal for 2 sec's when starting from cold.

2. Slight ticking/tapping noise from engine heard after a long run, particularly noticable when in garage and no other backround noise. Fades when revving.

Both are normal (and annoying).

Must admit though mines sound quite good on first starting now due to CAI and cat back exhaust.....just sounds meaty and not like a diesel.

I think the ticking comes from a filter(?).......

Welcome to Briskoda, PhilR. :D

Some 1.8Ts suffer more from a diesel-like sound on start-up than others. As far as the ticking noise is concerned, the following posts might help:

It's a 1.6. The clicking / ticking noise is coming from a box attached to the top of the OS wing. It has a large lead coming out of the top, which has a white arrow stamped on it pointing towards the engine, and a smaller batch of leads (they're in that plastic "bendy" cover) going God knows where! Where the large lead enters the box, there is a seal with "Bosch" on it. Bout the best I could do a 6.30 this morning!

This is the charcoal cannister. It basically re-circulates the engine/ petrol vapour fumes back to the petrol tank, and the ticking you can hear is the pump/valve.

I hope that sets your mind at rest.

Hi Phil & Welcome to BRISKODA.net -- I had the same concerns when I first got my vRS,however I posted a thread -- and got many replies telling me it was normal, however at around 6,000 miles I did and Oil & Filter change -- using the correct oil & filter -- result -- noise gone -- the filter fitted as new from the factory is different from the replacement -- maybe this has an effect on the amount of oil draining back.

Hi, Phil.

(Yet another) Welcome to Briskoda.

You don't really need to worry about odd noises on startup. The 1.8T engine (in all its many disguises, across all the VAG marques) is noted for sounding like a diesel on startup :) You may also notice several other noises - mine, for instance, sounds like the exhaust is blowing and there's a turbine (not the turbocharger) running at high speed for a few minutes after starting from cold. This seems to be normal - al least, nothing has fallen off after 24,000 miles of driving :D

Mike - the turbine type noise you refer to is the Secondary air pump -- it basically pumps fresh air into the engine on a cold start to keep emmisions down -- once the engine is at normal temp it will stop.

The pump is mounted in front of the engine just slightly right of centre -- and looks a little like a siren.
