The original Command & Conquer.

Featured Replies

Ever since years ago I've wanted to replay the original C&C game, and all the promises of working with anything newer than Windows 98 have failed. But I just found a site which has allowed me to download the game, install it on Windows 7, and it plays flawlessly (albeit a bit blocky compared to todays games).

See here...

Basically, download this... http://download.digiex.net/Games/C&C%20Gold/cc95v106c_r2_full.exe and install it.

Download this, unpack it and put it in the main Westwood folder... http://download.digiex.net/Games/C&C%20Gold/cnc1_movies_full.rar

Then go to the C&C95 application, right click > Properties > Compatibility and select Windows 95 for XP operating systems, and Windows 98 for Vista operating systems and higher. Then just play the game. :sun:

Still a favourite of mine.

The original Command and Conquer was the first PC game I bought, when we got our first PC my Dad gave us a demo CD a friend had given him and we played through the demos but the one that we started playing for hours and hours was the original Command and Conquer.  There were three levels but the second one was the best as it gave you a chance to build a base and a decent range of units, I still can't believe how much we played it as there were so many different save files for it.

My brothers and I chipped in together and bought the full game (a huge amount of money at the time) and played it to death as well then bought one of these collection CD's where they'd download a large amount of content online (we didn't even have a modem at the time), burn it to a CD then sell it.  The content on the CD was vast, lots of mod tools, customised levels, units etc. which was just a treasure trove to go through.  It would be quite funny tweaking the APV to give it an obelisk of light laser weapon and super fast speed (although initially forgot about turning speed so it would sprint along, slowly rotate then sprint away again) only to find with horror that the NOD enemy on the custom level had GDI units and a group of APV's would vaporise us.

It's just so depressing that Westwood studios and Command and Conquer are both dead and buried, RTS games have always been one of my favourite genres but from being a prime on the PC they seem to have faded mostly away.

Coincidentally I'm watching a documentary about anonymous and they are talking about the Low Orbit Ion Cannon (the denial of service attack tool) which one of the 'experts' is explaining is named after the end game weapon from Red Alert...sigh.
