Audi A6 Allroad

Featured Replies

Just thinking a bit ahead once I put my Octavia up for sale, but what are they like?

Looking at around 2001-2003 model or maybe just a A6 Advant Quattro as a work horse for 6-12 months. Any common problems or issues pro's and con's.

Nice car, quite a few issues around the suspension though, like the 2.7 engine though!

I looked at one of these.

The air suspension can be a pain if it goes wrong.  There is a place in the States which claims to have a cure or at least an improvement.  To the extent of ditching the air and fitting coils.

Interweb gossip on the 2.7 is not all that positive.  It was replaced by the 3.0 fairly quickly, and that was a redesign, not just a cc hike.

Working on one can be tedious, as in long and drawn out.  Oh, and expensive.

Like I say, all forum/blog noise, but considering the amount of it versus the volume sold, I was put off.  Timid me.

Very expensive. Certainly hold their money well.

Thought the 2.7td was a good motor and it was the older 2.5 V6 that was a real pain, front of the car needed removed to do the belts.

My Dad had one (2005) and it was a great car overall. It lasted him a few years until the big bills started.

Was very sure footed but it is a heavy car with 4x4. It was an auto so it did hesitate a bit and surprisingly low on power for the engine. A remap sorted that and really did make a huge difference to the car.

In the end he had to scrap it. A fuel pump issue and suspension was looking at costing him over £3k so he decided it was time to move on and got the superb. He did look at an new A4 or A6 as a replacement but didn't want to spend that much on a car.

Common problems - You will at some point get a problem with the suspension unless its already been replaced. Although you can change to springs if your not bothered about the different ride heights. As it turns out the fuel pump went 3 times too and they are very expensive to replace. Oh and watch out for the road tax cost too, depending on which model you go for. Fuel economy is poor too. AT best on a run he was getting mid 20's.

Very expensive. Certainly hold their money well.

You are probably right. Weren't the belts at the back of the block?

It was a long time ago.

Octimark, thanks for some real life experiences.

I looked into a 2.5V6 some years back. Lucky escape. The timing belt on them and some aux belts are at the front and required the front bumper and radiator to be removed. Was a £1000 dealer job. There may well be belts at the back too, I think the number of belts was an issue in itself. Dealer put me off at the time saying unless you were towing the performance of the 2.5 over the 1.9 was minimal but fuel consumption was much higher.

I've driven a non-quattro A6 with the 2.7tdi and it was lovely lump. I think it's much rarer since there were few advantages over the 3.0.  It's a little bit more economical and a little bit slower and a little bit cheaper.

Suspension I expected as much from the adverts I've been looking at. A lot stated recent big bills to replace suspension as a selling point.

I thought the 2.5TDi was a ok engine? The ones I've been looking at are 2.7's and auto's

I'm looking for a bit of street cred, space so has to be estate and something that could be run for a year and possibly sold for near to what I paid for it.

At the age of car I'm looking at, the market seems to be about as low as it will go (for a good nick and fully working car).

Dunno what made me think A6 Allroad apart from I saw one and it looked ok.

2.5 was reliable enough but not that economical or powerful (sub 30mpg on the 180). And a big bill every 4/5yr for teh belts was meant a lot of them weren't done when they should have been.

2.7 and 3.0 are chain cam and just much more modern engines overall.

Injection pump seems to be a worry on them with a big bill

I think the injection pump issues with the 2.5 only affected earlier engines and was resolved at some point but I'm not sure when.

The 2.7 TDI wasn't available until later though so a 2001-2003 car rules that one out.

On the whole the 2.5 is a good engine just do some research on the pump issues as I'm sure they fixed it.

The gearbox is pretty rock solid too. Most require an oil change some time after breaking the 100k miles mark. Although not required according to Audi ("filled for life") the changes can become a little sloppy and jumpy which is often cured with an oil and filter change.

I know someone who has just bought an old 2001 Range Rover. It's had it's air suspension system removed and normal springs etc fitted. I can imagine someone has thought of a similar system for the audis too.

Sure, no problem at all.  When they are knackered, spend another fortune replacing the suspension.

That was just the first google page.  Between the howto's on utube.

Maybe there were some UK/EU ones in the next few dozen pages.

Arnotts at least also have systems for rangerover's.   Both a coil replacement and an upgraded air.

Maybe after reading there is a reason these are cheap!!

I will keep looking about, I'm fairly sure I don't want the headache of a big bill.

I shouldve said I meant the 2.7t petrol engine, same as the s4 albiet detuned (I could be wrong) but expensive to run.

I have been in a 2.7 tdi a4 07 plate which is nice but guy who brought it reckons he shouldve held out for the 3.0

3.0tdi is much nicer tbh the old 2.5 is pretty old

Sigarland1987 it was the 2.7t petrol's that I've also been looking at. Mileage that I'd do probably would cost me that much.

  • 2 weeks later...

How much are you looking to spend?
