Headlight switch foglight illumination

Featured Replies

Question:

Should the foglight symbols on the headlight switch light up when the foglights are switched on?

As I very rarely use them, I don't really know the answer. There is obviously a light on the dash to show the rear foglights are on, but should the front foglights have an 'on' indicator?

I have a retro fitted auto light switch as the car was built with a dusk sensor but no auto lights (seems to be common with many of these). I also have cornering fog activated with a 30 byte CECM, this wouldn't have anything to do with it would it?

Is the switch duff?

Yes, the front fog light symbol on the light switch gets brighter, in the same way the Auto position also gets brighter when selected.

The rear fog light has its own separate light up on the dash near the speedo so this icon on the headlight switch doesn't change.

That's what I thought it should do. Hmmm wonder why that is.

As far as I know, the auto switch in mine is original and the only section that lights up to show it's selected is the 'auto' position. All other positions are only ever dimly lit from what I recall.

I get tell tales for the front and rear fogs at the top of the speedo cluster even with cornering fogs enabled.

Is this a pre-FL vs FL thing?

On my Pr fl it's as silver1011 said. Turn lights from auto to on and pull. It goes from a dark green to a light green to show it's on

I've just checked the PDF versions of both the pre-facelift and facelift hand books.

The facelift gets both a front and rear foglight warning light up on the dash, nothing down on the switch.

The pre-FL is however as mentioned, only the rear foglight has a warning in the dash, the front foglight icon gets brighter on the switch.

Seems they improved things with the FL. The brighter illumination of the switch on the pre-FL is far easier to miss than one in your line of sight.

I wonder if the headlight switch you have fitted is a 'later' version and this is the reason it doesn't get brighter, it instead expects a separate warning on the dash?

It might well do, I never really recall the front foglight indicator lighting up on this particular switch. I swapped it out the other night for the original non-auto lights switch, turned the front foglights on and there is of course an LED in the foglights position that lights up when engaged. I didn't pull the auto lights switch apart to see if there's an LED but it might be worth looking into the availability of an earlier switch.
