Dealer rant Re. juddery Brakes

Featured Replies

As some may be aware, I posted last week complaining of juddery brakes. Devonutopia kindly provided me a pair of discs to swap

Today I swapped them over, and I discovered that when I had the pads changed at the dealers about 1,000 miles ago the inside pads were originally 25mm width, where as the new ones are 40mm across, the same as the outsiders. This meant the 15mm of the new pads where catching against rough unworn parts of the discs, which are 35,000 miles old. :( This is what was giving me the judders.

I have now replaced the discs with ones that are even all the way across the surface and I have silky smooth braking :), although I have 15mm of my pads worn off significantly.

Now, I believe the cause of the problem was the dealer not putting the correct pads on. Should I go to them with an old disc and complain.

In a word YES, Be polite but Firm, youve obviously spent time & money sorting it. Suggest whats its cost you, they are unlikely to give you money but something like free parts or a free service is worth suggesting.

IF they adopt a "dont give a stuff" attitude talk to Skoda & if still no Joy then its Name & Shame on the Internet time, theres also I guess trading standards to help bugger them up.

As I said initially be firm but appear to be reosnable, avoid confrontation initially. Most things can normally be sorted in a civil manner

Another little Jem if your shure of your facts is to put brief details on the biggest piece of paper you can find, tape it to the inside of your windows & park the car outside of the dealers, I know someone who did something similar to a ford dealer & it worked a treat !!

BEFORE You Go TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Mad check that the pads originally on the car before the dealer changed them were correct, if not then they fitted the correct pads & possibly should have told you about the discs but might have left it in the hope that they wore in & saved you money

Cheers, The thing that confuses me is that the pads were 40mm on the outside of the car and 25mm on the innner, I presumed they should be the same. The new ones were 40mm all round. When they told me the pads needed doing, they said the discs were OK, and they would have been if 25mm's were fitted.

Anyway it only cost me

Was it your first pad change?

I think so, I've owned the car since December and done about 12,000 miles. Overall its done around 35,000miles, the last owner was an elderly lady.

The pads are normally an odd size on the FSIII brakes.

Inner pad has a large silver metal tag that pushes into the piston and the out has a smaller black tag that clips into the side of the caliper.

But if you have repaired it yourself its unlikely your dealer will do anything.

I see, they are FSIII Calipers.

Why did the dealer fit larger inner pads then?

Especaily when he should/would know that they would catch.

I'm not after compensation etc., but would it be worth letting them know.

Here's a pic to show the difference.
