Power Steering Pump Change

Featured Replies

Following my previous questions regarding PAS faults, I am now looking to do a pump swap. What is the best way to access the pump to carry out the change?

Front bumper off and access from the front?

Or

Wheel off and arch liner out?

Wheel off and arch liner out, you don't need to remove the bumper since you can get access through it by removing the foglight.

I found doing both just made things a little easier all round. :)

Ok I need to do this relatively quickly as I am at work until 2 tomorrow and then need to set to and hit it and get it back together, as my son needs it to get to work.

So what is the simplest way of doing the job, I will also be doing an oil and filter change at the same time.

If the arch liner gives enough access then that sounds like the way to go. I take it the battery box and air filter will have to come out to get to re fill the fluid reservoir, how about access to the hydraulic hose fittings?

Sorry for the questions, just trying to get a bit of a feel for it before I start.

Hose fittings are on the wheel arch side. It's the electrics which point to front of car, so are more of a pain.

You can reconnect the hoses and refill the pump before refitting it therefore you don't need to remove the battery box etc.

It's a bit of a pig if the fan relays are in the way since removing them is a ****** because all the wiring round them is so tight.

It's not a particularly easy or quick job because access is so difficult.

Best way I found was to remove the bumper, wheel off and arch liner out, I also removed the headlight to refill the bottle.

Pretty straight forward job I thought

Success!

Went in wheel arch way and fog light removed to access electrics. I need not have worried about the job 2 1/2 hrs including oil and filter change. :)

Thanks to all who advised on this and the other thread.

Yes thank you, PAS fault light went out straight away. I might do a "post mortem" on the old pump to see if there is anything obvious inside (it was a s/h scrapyard replacment) so the car is now on at least its 3rd pump in 14yrs!

i was pleased with how straightforward the job was, under 2 1/2hrs start to finish. :)

As long as it's TRW it should work.

Cool - I am on my 2nd one, but only because of going to vRS spec all round.  My (what was almost 14 years old) pump was still working well.  Less so for the rack though which was starting to give up in regards to the angle sensor housing

As long as it's TRW it should work.

Thank you!
