Octavia TDI 2002 - Erratic Idle Please help :)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I purchased a 2002 Octavia TDI 110 a few weeks ago. I have noticed now that it does not idle correctly, the engine shakes a bit. I have  connected it up to VAGCOM and the idle speed varies basically every second from 882 - 924. My other Octavia has a constant 903.

Anyone got any ideas what it can be? the car has no fault codes.. The previous owner had the cambelt done rather recently, prior to me purchasing it. It was done in a garage though.

Thanks,
CK

This would be better in the Octavia I forum.

Have you checked the timing with VCDS?

How do I check the timing with VCDS? I could go and check it tomorrow :)

Also think about unmetred air in the system, leaking or split pipework, dirty MAF sensor, could be a number of things but I'd start with vcds and airflow. As an example (not saying it is this) when a pipe popped off my secondary air pump the idle went a bit nuts, management light came on mind.

You need the full version, or a registered version of VCDS lite. Look on the Ross Tech website for an explanation of how to do it.

Ok well I have checked the timing, it is within limits but only just.... I have put the picture below from the Screenshot....  Am I right in thinking if it is close to the limits, this could still be the problem? For instance the car runs like ****ter when cold. I am still getting no other fault codes, so running out of things what it can be..

That shouldn't cause any problems. I ran my old car with similarly advanced timing.

Try unplugging the coolant temperature sensor and see if it still idles funny.

Ok new temp sensor fitted, new fuel filter & seals... found a little hole in fuel line, so cut that out... Car is still running the sam

Check all the vacuum lines.

checked them cannot see anything wrong with them visually :(

Worth checking the tensioners as one of mine failed quickly after a cambelt change.

PD130 engine.

checked them cannot see anything wrong with them visually :(

Do the brakes work OK? Pedal doesn't go hard does it?

Yeah brakes feel fine to be honest, no problems with them at all. I have 2 Octavias with same engine etc, and brakes feel same as the other one.

I would double check all the hoses. Could a really gunged up egr vavle, quite easy to check by taking the boost pipe into the egr off.

To be honest I did look in the EGR the other day, and it looked like it has  alot of gunge.. I will at the weekend, clean this out to see if it makes any difference. I did think the EGR would have flagged a light. I will try it though..

THanks

If your doing the egr it will be worth cleaning the inlet manifold too.
