Octavia vRS Diesel - is high maintenace engine?

Featured Replies

Just about to pull the trigger on a diesel vRS, looking between 2010-13, have a couple to choose from.

However in a chat with my (very reliable) garage today, who were finishing off a couple of items I wanted fixed before selling the current wheels, he said stay away from modern diesels. Too much trouble if you're not doing long journeys to clear the particle filters.

I'll be doing commutes across country roads with very little traffic, though plenty juntion start stops. About 15-17 miles each way depending which route I take.

So question is, how much trouble is a diesel, and is it not worth the extra mpg you gain?

Anybody got any thoughts?  :|

Not had any problems with mine so far, doing about 10 miles each way on the daily commute with a mix of 30 mph urban and 60 mph single carriageway rural routes. Most modern diesels that were designed to work with dpf's seem to be fine it's the earlier ones that aren't as far as I'm aware.

After working for Skoda for 7 years the vrs tdi engine give us the least amount of trouble. The odd oxygen sensor but nothing major.

Excellent, thank you guys. While I have an excellent mechanic/garage, he is a bit Ford biased. Fears allayed  :sun:

From experience I've found the cr170 engine to be a brilliant unit and one that I'd recommend to any prospective purchaser.

Had two Octavias over a 5 year period and no issues to report other than flaky paintwork on front bumper around number plate and underside.(quite common).

Go for it!

The CR engine gets tarred with the dirty diesel brush I'm afraid after stupid salesmen sold loads of small diesel cars to little old wimmin doing 2 mile journeys so the general uneducated view due to over reaction is that diesels are soooo problematic. This might be true for some engines, but in general the CR does not suffer from DPF problems and doing those sorts of miles and journeys each day you'll be fine.
