MOT Suspension Advisory

Featured Replies

Morning, cars just been MOT'd after having front springs changed, but I have an advisory on MOT certificate. It says "offside/nearside front suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement".

What does this mean, and what am I gonna need to correct it?

Cheers in advance

As it says, its just a bush, these are pennies plus what an hour labour so not mega expensive.

In my opinion, while they have it apart they could do all the associated bushes, there are usually 2 or 3 per wishbone. If one is worn, the others might be.

Or just get 2 new wishbones, would be quicker I guess.

yeah I have done new wishbones when lots of bushes need doing. I think the bushes on my old Mk6.5 Escort were 6 quid each or a whole wishbone was £22 from a trade parts place.

Where's gonna be best and cheapest to get new wishbones from? As cheap as possible really after spending £350 on it last week

It means that the visible parts of the suspension bush no longer look like they did when it was new and at the time of test when the front end was pulled about there was no or minimal movement in the bush.  Nothing to worry about at the moment, just periodically check it for any undue movement or any abnormal sounds, the chances are it'll be OK until the next MOT.

Will it not cause excessive tyre wear? Noticed on my previous set of front tyres they wore right down to the spikey part on the inside

Personally Id take the opportunity to fit 2 new wishbones, balljoints and get the wheel alignment done.

It will probably be the rear bushes on the front wishbones. I had those replaced with uprated TT ones and left the original bushes in the front of the wishbones - all good. It's also common for the collars to break on the ARB so it's worth getting that checked out at the same time.

You can still drive the car but I would recommend getting it done in the next 6 months and keeping a closer eye on your tyre wear.

I don't think a car can be failed now for worn bushes hence the advisory. I replaced my wish bones purely because of age and wear and tear after they had completed approx 140K.

Pretty sure it can if the suspension moves too much as a result of the worn bush. You can download the MOT testing manual for free online if you can be bothered to check it.
