MFSW - Broken button

Featured Replies

Has anyone experienced one of the buttons breaking on the MFSW?

Not sure how these differ on the various models where fitted, but the right hand button (the one used to change between the different modes) has stopped functioning. What I believe to have happened is the button below the plastic has collapsed and so does not spring back up anymore.

If this has happened to anyone, have you been able to have this repaired and if so was it under warranty?

Not happened on mine, but if it has broken then don't attempt a repair yourself. I would say is a warranty issue & if you have a tinker yourself you will invalidate the warranty.

Defo a warranty issue and should be fixed without question.

Thanks for responding. I too believe it to be a warranty issue - however, I just wondered if this had happened to anyone else (seems not at present), whether it had been covered by warranty or whether I would fall foul of it being considered part of the interior which is only subject to a 6 month guarantee. I shall find out when i drop by the dealers tomorrow.

BTW, I would not even attempt to take the steering wheel apart before being looked at by the dealer et al.

I'll keep this thread updated on any outcome incase it does happen to others in the future.

My car is booked in to have this button looked at on Wednesday.  It's a March 2014-registered model with 11,000 miles on this clock which I have just bought.  It was supplied to me with the faulty button.

Appreciate what you say about the 6 month issue, but parts like this should be robust enough to last the lifetime of the car. If they do try to suggest it is part of the 6 month warranty I would refer them to "goods being of suitable quality & fit for purpose". I feel sure you will get it sorted no problem. My motor is 18 months old & after repeated use of the MFSW buttons there is no issue with them. You also have "iriches" similar problem to show it's not isolated to your car.

Are you sure its not temp related JerryT. My right button started doing the same think this week since since the real cold snap (assuming youre in the UK somewhere of course).....whilst the car is very cold it gets stuck down but still functions...as the interior warms up normal service resumes.

I think its the way the buttons are designed thats the problem; they are very tightly fitted in the wheel and I suspect when the inside of the car gets near freezing temp...particularly given the right hand side of the wheel being nearer the greenhouse probably gets that little bit colder (now also assuming yours is RHD) it seems just enough to affect the operation of the right button....probably the plastic just contracting that little bit too much around the outside of the switch.

Gonna be difficult to replicate at a dealers so will probably just put it down to a quirk of the car....would feel differently if the button did not work when exhibiting the behaviour though.

Could be pipsyp, but as i have the car for 17 months and covered 28,000 miles, i think this more of a failure than an effect of the cold.

Mine had the exact same problem. Stuck in 'Phone'. You could rock it back by pushing the opposite end, but it would not change function. Replaced last week under warranty. Waiting for the other one on the left to pack up next. There is some sort of spring mech beneath which is being prevented from returning the button to default. My guess is that is a temp thing. Button seemed to be catching on the housing  Mine started with the onset of winter

Just to confirm my button was replaced today with no problems.

Mine is fine now....if it gets worse its due a service soon so will mention it then
