LED Sidelights - Built in Canbus or spearate Canbus?

Featured Replies

OK this may be a question that has been asked and answered but I'm feeling lazy so here we go...

For the past few years I've had CANBUS LED's in the front sidelights on our 2007 4x4 from a variety of sellers both on here, off online retailers or off ebay at hugely varying prices .  They have all worked fine with no error lights on the dash initially and have all generally been the type with multiple SMD's - with either multiple small SMDs on each side or a single large SMD on each side.

However, over time they have all started to flicker with one or more SMD flashing or giving up the ghost.  This generally hasn't initially led to error lights and they have remained working but usually after a few have started to display the same issue the error light comes up on the dash and I've replaced them.

I've also had single Cree non-CANBUS LEDs in the Civic for some time now and these seem substantially more robust and reliable (touch wood) so I am of the opinion that it is the heat from the built-in CANBUS resistors that is causing those in the Octavia to fail.

I'd therefore be interested to hear peoples experience of using seperate error cancellers and non-Canbus LEDs to see whether these are proving more reliable before I splash out on more replacements or get the soldering iron out to try and fix the current ones...

Cheers Mike,

Interesting...   but doesn't that risk the original filament bulbs getting hot and damaging some of the internal wiring within the headlight unit (there's a lot of wires in there with the LondonColour kit).

Cheap and cheerful though I guess and probably just as good as separate cancellers.

They don't get hot enough to do any damage, and there us plenty of room even with the HID kit. The slimline ballasts sit well forward actually underneath the internal components of the headlight unit, and the rest of the HID kit sits very loosely along with the filament sidelight bulbs behind the rear cover.

It's surprising how much light they give as engine bay lights!

OK - worth a further look at that idea then.  Interesting that you have the ballasts inside the main body of the light - I have them velcro'd to the inside of the rear cover as I wodnered if they might conflict with the movement of the levelling mechanisms if they were inside...
