MDI Not Working - HELP?

Featured Replies

Hi,

As you know I collected my Rapid 1.6 TDI 105PS CR Elegance.

I have had the car a couple of days. I got a MDI lead and then used the apple 30pin to lightening cable to connect to my iPhone 6+. This worked fine and the system picked it up instantly and read 'MDI INITIALIZING'.

Today it stopped working. It says 'MDI READING' then 'NO MDI CONNECTED'..

It is connected and I have pressed the 'MEDIA' button and the only says 'CD' and 'AUX'.

It doesn't work. I'm a little let down that I'm having issues with the car and i've only owned it a couple of days..

Cheers,

Garry.

What head unit is fitted?

Can you go back to the dealer and get them to sort it under warranty?

Sway Unit

Yeah I think I'll have to. But the dealer I purchased it from is over 100 miles away.

'Sway'? Is th at name of the head unit as I've not heard of that one.

Is it the 'swing'

Yes! 'Swing' hahaha.

When you say you have the MDI cable what cable is this? Is this plugged into the usb port in the centre console? If you search for the thread I made about MDI it was discovered it just doesn't work with anything other than USB stick unless you buy a BMW lightening/aux cable.

Hi, I got a BMW cable. Like I said I had it working fine with my iPhone for 2 days. Track info, steering wheel control all fine. Then today I got in and nothing. Feels like it might be a port fault. Where the aux cable goes next to the sub port is, this is loose..

Taking it to Skoda tomorrow... Not a happy chappy. :(

I had loads of problems with my MDI, I bought the BMW cable and it still doesn't work, but I don't know if that's because I bought a cheap cable. (buy cheap buy twice!) kinda given up now and bought a Columbus head unit anyway which works brill over Bluetooth.

Me too - bought the wrong cheapo BMW lead. chrisgreen has the correct combination of cheap leads to make this work - try a PM to him.

Hello

Right, have a look at this thread: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/329900-mdi-whats-the-crack/page-2

In that thread, I posted details of a cheap MDI (USB + 3.5mm to Apple Dock Connector) cable that works in conjunction with a genuine Apple Dock Connector to Lightning adaptor. If you are not using a genuine Apple Dock Connector to Lightning adaptor, then I can pretty much guarantee that's where your problem is.

However, I have found that the MDI on the Rapid is also prone to the occasional 'senior moment' like you have described. It is usually cured by disconnecting your MDI cable from both the car and the Apple device, and turning the ignition off & on again (causing the power to cycle and soft reboot the MDI interface). After that, everything should work as normal (if using either the cable + adapter combo I have mentioned above, or using the genuine BMW USB + 3.5mm to Lightning cable (also shown in the thread I've linked to).

Agree, the sequence of "plug in" and "switch on" has to be correct or the electronic handshake between the gadgets doesn't happen properly.

If the OP's kit was working once, the chances are he hasn't done the switch on in the right order since.

Same happens with the Octavia 3 too [emoji19]

Hey, I purchased a used genuine BMW cable after reading your thread and was so happy it was working fine. Have tried multiple times now over the last 2 days and still no luck. As explained, I am having window issues too so taking it to my local skoda dealership tonight after work for them to have a gander. I'll ask then. Do you think they will say I've voided my warranty by using a BMW cable rather than a skoda one?

Thanks everyone though! :(

I highly doubt it and if they do, they are taking you for a ride. It's just a cable it doesn't affect any part of the car, or change anything. The only way it could be warranty voiding if there was physical damage to the ports. AFAIK Skoda don't even do those types of cables, hence having to use BMW.

Absolutely correct - Skoda (in fact, any part of VAG) does not even do a USB + 3.5mm to Lightning cable, which is why we have to buy the official BMW one. VAG only does a legacy dock connector lead (which is in fact the same lead BMW sells). Fortunately, BMW uses exactly the same interface tech (it's off the shelf stuff) in the Mini and some other BMW models that VAG uses in its cars, which is why it works.

Garrry: Unless you have physically damaged the ports on the car (highly unlikely unless you've jammed the leads into the sockets with herculean force) there would be no grounds for them to cite your use of a non VAG cable. Far more likely is that the MDI interface simply needs a hard reset. The software is definitely a bit (very) flakey so it's probably just crashed, warranting a hard reset.

Do let us know how you get on, and if indeed this is the problem and a reset fixes it, do be careful going forward of the order you connect everything together, to avoid causing another crash. Not ideal I know, but sadly this is what we have to work with on these cars.

Connecting order I've found to be reliable:

With car started, and radio not set to MDI:

Connect MDI lead to USB + 3.5mm, switch radio to MDI

As MDI is initialising, connect Lightning end to iOS device

It should spring into life.

Things I've found to cause problems:

Powering on/starting the car with MDI cable & device connected to the interface

Connecting MDI cable to interface with phone already connected to cable

Hello all.

Newby here with my 12 hours old Rapid 1.6 tdi elegance.

So do I understand correctly a normal usb to iPhone 4s cable won't give me music access? I tried earlier and it says something about not being compatible?

Can music work over Bluetooth?

I have Swing unit by the way.

Thanks.

Gary

Yes, you can stream music, podcasts etc from your iPhone over Bluetooth - however you will have no track info displayed on the screen of the Swing, and your steering controls won't control your iPhone (you'll need the MDI wired connection for that).

If you have a 4S you are lucky, the link I've posted earlier in this thread to an inexpensive USB + 3.5mm to dock connector MDI cable will do the job and not break the bank.

How do you get the bluetooth music to work? Can't seem to make it happen with my iPhone 4S in Rapid 1.6tdi elegance with sports mfsw and Swing radio.

Ok, first question - do you actually have Bluetooth factory fitted in the car?

If so, once the phone connects to the car, play something, and then press the media button on the Swing until the connection options show up (Aux, MDI, BT-Audio etc). Select the BT-Audio option and noise will happen.

If that still doesn't work, go into the bluetooth menu via Maxidot and select Media Player, in there you can make sure your phone is pairing for streaming audio as well as hand free telephone.

Phone works via Bluetooth as phone. Tried via maxidot but couldn't work it out. Media shows only cd or mdi.

Sounds like it's only pairing your phone as a phone. Go into the Bluetooth menu on Maxidot (you may have to press the phone button once to get the phone network and signal info showing, before clicking on the right click wheel to access the menu). Select Bluetooth, then media player. From there you can check what device is paired for media player, if any. If no device (or wrong device) is paired for media player, you can change it.

Why is it that when someone gives instructions to do what you thought you had already done and not succeeded, when you do it again, it works!

Simples! Play something on paired phone and press media!!!

However it may have been because I had it charging through USB before and it didn't like doing both!

Do not recommend using the MDI USB port just to charge your iPhone with an ordinary cable - the MDI interface will just keep trying to connect, fail and reset. The constant on/off cycling of the power on the MDI as it resets and tries again won't do the phone or the interface much good. Obviously, using a proper MDI USB cable is fine. Invest either in an MDI cable or a 12v iPhone charger.

Is that a squillion pound cable from Skoda direct only?

Anyway my problem before was merely incompetence on my part!
