TDI to VRS Suspension and brakes.

Featured Replies

I brought my 2001 "Y" TDI a few months back and decided before I had even picked it up to change the wheels to 16" VRS alloys.

I tracked down some as new VRS alloys on here and for a few pounds extra the seller sold me the complete VRS suspension and brakes.

The wheels fitted great and look great and last weekend we finally got round to fitting the suspension and brakes.

The only difference between the 2 rear end set ups are the rear springs, the shocks, disc etc are the same although we did fit the nice green callipers for show but they are the same size as the std TDI. We also changed the shock/damper as mine had done 24K and the VRS ones have only done about 1K so a lot newer.

The front was slightly different and gave us a surprise. I had spoken to a couple of dealership parts departments and they all said the VRS stuff would fit my TDI.

Well yes the suspension will as the shock/damper is the same part so the only change is the spring. Again we changed both as the VRS kit was 23K miles newer. But the Brakes will not fit as the hub is completely different and I will need to get 2 VRS or later TDI (need to investigate) front hubs for the callipers to bolt on to.

Anyway the std brakes are OK even after a ten mile dash through some country lanes I know very well testing the improved suspension I only just started to get the brakes to fade and I was pressing on.

The VRS disc and callipers look much bigger and are of course a lot newer so maybe I will look into replacing the hubs at a latter date but all is OK at the moment with the std brakes but the green callipers would look good through the alloys.

Have a look at Devonutopia's posts (aka Jason) - he posted about what is different between the two etc.

I think you basically end up needing a new hub assembly at about 150 quid, but please check his post(s) as he basically converted his PD100 to a 'PDxxx' with a whole bunch of vRS parts on it, no doubt he'll know most of the answers to your questions as he asked a load of them on this site :D

Hope that helps,

WW

Bear in mind that the vRS suspension is sprung for a heavier nose weight so you may find it is bouncier than on the vRS. However, it will be significantly better than the standard PD100 setup ;)

As said above, the PD100 uses a FSIII brake setup which differs from the vRS so you'll need to invest in some new hubs. If you do invest in new hubs, you'll have the option to upgrade to the Octy vRS 312mm setup as well which'll look even better through your alloys :D

Blimey a conversion thread that Jason hasn't posted in.

I've been out OK!? Leave me alone! :P

Yeah, you need new outer hub housings from a vRS to fit the vRS brakes, but then if you're getting the hubs, why not spend just
