Columbus system upgrades?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, know this has been done to death but I've found the results abit confusing.

Looking to upgrade firmware on a skoda superb '09 with columbus system in.

At present the car doesn't recognize anything over a 2GB memory card and won't pick up bfs htc phone but will pick up my samsung.

We are led to believe a firmware upgrade may mean we can use a bigger memory card and his phone might work but alot of infomation seems conflicting.

We took it to a skoda garage (whos service was appalling and no one seemed to have a clue what a car was) and asked them to upgrade maps AND firmware. they upgraded the maps and said firmware was most up to date but we know some one who bought another superb same age etc but only difference was non 4x4 and an automatic and theres is upgraded.

Really confused to what options there are now?! I've read alot about burning a disc and loading it yourself but abit worried about corrupting the whole system then having to fork out alot of money to get it fixed so would rather have it done properly

first things first, what firmware is the unit on now?

What is the part number of your Columbus? Is there an 'A' after the part number or not?

These are on the label on the outside of the casing. You'll need to remove it see these.

You may be able to get the part number and firmware version from the Columbus itself if the 'secret' menu is already enabled. Hold down 'Setup' to get past the ":Radio test menu' to the next menu.

Hi can't get onto secret menu. Number on side is 3T0 035 680

That's an early version (Revision A).

You'll need to be careful which firmware you get as yours is an older unit.

I believe that this is the one you need: http://www.rnsfirmware.com/firmware-4020-for-older-units-in-europe-with-hdd-rations-60355/

This one specifically repartitions the 30Gb HDD slightly differently to allow for the latest maps (post v.9 with speed camera database I believe) to fit in the relevant partition.

Just for completeness, this is the one with standard partition percentage sizes also for older units (Revision A or B: http://www.rnsfirmware.com/firmware-4020-for-older-european-rns510-units/

I'd drop Adamal on here a PM as he is more knowledgeable about these units as he had one and upgraded it a few times. Consequently he will be able to confirm whether this is the right one for you or not.

Will skoda be able to upgrade these or do they not like doing this? Thanks for all your help so far x

Just abit worried as the link states do not attempt unless you know what you are doing and technology hates me

Skoda dealers generally don't have clue as to what they are doing with regards to firmware updates.

Unless the computer (when plugged in) says something needs doing, they won't know as a rule and won't do anything outside of their remit.

There is aching that you can 'brick' the unit (i.e. turn it into a worthless brick to use as a doorstop), but I have seen or heard of this happening. I believe that Adamal has used the firmware from one of tis links (if not both of them), so PM him for advice - he won't mind and I think your post count is high enough now to be able to send PM's!

I will have ago !

Just seen this, the firmware KB pointed too in post 5 is the one to go for.

Be mindful you will need to reinstall your maps afterwards as they will probably be wiped by the update.

I was literally just trying to search you this second.. aha

So long and short of it, I download the file, burn it to a high quality dvd then put it in the car??

Yes. Use imgburn to "create disk from image" and do it as slowly as your PC will allow.
