256mm vented rear brakes/calipers

Featured Replies

After test fitting the r32 brakes today the rear look so small..

How much do the rear brakes do?

Is it worth upgrading to the 256mm vented brakes/calipers or is it pointless?

Ant

Rear brakes are on a bias to front of 70:30 in vag iirc

yeah, generally not worth it, standard rear brakes can handle most things :) to put it in perspective, I have gone through a set of discs and yellow stuff pads in 1 year of track days..... (getting new tomorow! yay!) the rears are about 70% new (35k) and not got overheated at all :) I'll probably be leaving them alone for 100k! lol..

I can buy a brand new set of caliper and carriers with the disc and pads for £180 delivered. That's why I asked but also seen people saying it not worth doing.

Unless you put them on you will not be able to tell.

As I said, I never regretted having them both upgraded, I also believe that since you are putting up such big brakes up front you need a bit of balance with the ones at the back so going up to 256 is in my opinion the reasonable choice.

I've gone from 280/232 to 312/232 and later to 312/256...

Yes, it's an upgrade you will want to do.
Otherwise, you'll upset the balance front/rear and put an unnecessary big strain on the front brakes.
That +  you'll wear the front out quicker aswell.

Like everything it comes down to what you want from the car.

I put 323mm on the front of my mk1 Fabia and it made the back quite loose on track, but on the road it was fine.

With your massive front brakes I'd definiately upgrade to rears to balance it.

Unless it's just for looks, in which case it doesn't matter.  Just do whatever looks nice.

I found some 300mm rear discs for mine which kept the stock caliper, just moved it out a bit.

It gave a very balanced set up.

Can't find the link at the moment...

i think I will do the rears now, There going to look silly plus like you said Richard it'll balance it out. If you could find me a link to do the 300mm rears would be nice.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but just to confirm that the front discs are 256mm? On ECP I see a lot of parts like pads which say they are for 288mm discs. As swapping the pads and discs are such an easy job, tempted to swap/upgrade.

It is just a straight swap isn't it, if I wanted to fit 288mm discs? Wouldn't be much heavier?

On an vRS the fronts are 288 and the rears 232

A good upgrade would be 312 or bigger up front and 256 at the back.

Thanks mate. Is the extra stopping power worth the extra weight etc? And do you need to change anything else to fit these? New callipers?

Wanted a straight disc and pad swap really. Only for road use though, so maybe not worth getting bigger ones.

there is a big debate about weight size ect ..... if you had standard 312's I would bet my yellowstuff 288 and ATE racing fluid would stop better...... if you did the fluid and top pads the 312's could be better... but limited to grip.......

I bought a complete caliper set up off a seat Leon cupra r last year, really need to get my arse into gear and get them overhauled and bolted on with braided lines. I'm not convinced the standard brakes on mine are actually working as they should but the dealer says there fine, it's like driving a car with permanent brake fade.

standard brakes are poor, I currently have cheap £18 pads in, as I got sent the wrong yellowstuff pads, and they are truely aweful....... I now have the correct yellowstuff pads, which of course will be in before the first track day this year!

For the 312s you don't need calipers but for the rears as you understand you need everything "new"

Weight? do you really consider such things when you got from stock 180 turbo horses?:P

More stopping power is always good and if you use the right pads and brake fluid your brakes will not fade after multiple braking BUT that is a trackday situation.

There is a company in America that do the 280mm conversion using the 232mm calipers for the rear. Been looking if anybody does them in the UK.

I have all stock brakes at the moment and like wrightcnc2009 wrote they are useless really, good for two laps and then gone, that is with Brembo HP2000 pads and RBF1000 Gulf racing fluid.

I am so fed up with this that I will be changing discs and pads all around for Pagid system, all OEM as I need to have a working benchmark for future upgrades. My rear OEM factory fitted pads are completely gone after 34kmiles so  Ineed to change then anyway

Fronts are not scored but have a significant lip so need changing anyways.

Recently it got so bad that it doesn't even work for a spirited road driving i.e. frequent heavy braking from legal speeds of course :).

When they did work with OEM 288 fronts and 232 rears I was getting the back wheels to lock up under the heaviest braking which made it fun as the back was all over the place, as sharkrider :). The point being backs had more stopping power than I could use due to $hit weight distribution of the Fabia. When you take everything out from the back it becomes so light that back wheels do not have enough weight pressing on them during braking when the dynamic weight transfer unloads the rear axle massively. And that was without even being able to lock the fronts with RS-R's on them!

Unless you will be tracking your car rear upgrades will not be noticeable from the performance point of view. To balance the car visually that is a no brainer :)

Two laps would be a massive improvement in my eyes, I struggle stopping for two corners on the public roads! I'm in two minds wether or not to go put down a deposit on the new civic type r or plough money into the bottomless hole and mod the vrs.

If I had the money I'd go for the new CTR, sorry, but no competition here. Or stay with the vRS if you like a challenge :).

When I take it apart next week I will have a very good look at the discs. The only thing I can think of is the baffles between the two surfaces of the discs failed due to excessive temps experienced during a track day and are getting progressively worse as they deteriorate. This causes the assembly to lose its rigidity and results in only a narrow solid contact area - I get say 15-25mm wide blue burned rings on my discs where the rest is untouched...

Sorry OT because i have not fitted larger Discs or pads for track use,

just the 3rd set of standard size Discs & pads that work & this has been in 40,000 road miles because of how badly mine corrode.

So Standard size Ferodo Discs and Pads come to just £140 for all 4 corners and i have now put a 1,000 miles of use with them in a week and they are stopping the car pretty well,

but then changing down manually with the DSG  means i seldom use the brakes.

That seems very good value George, where did you get them from? Local auto factor?

I'm coming up to 45,000 miles and still on the same discs and pads, but wanting to change soon, regardless of whether they need it or not!

Local Motor Factor and they were sitting on the shelf as just commonly required discs and pads for VW Group cars.

No more expensive than  Apec ones & the likes.

It is always a plaster with the Fabia Twincharger getting them to believe what car it is when buying or ordering parts.

*Fabia Mk2 Fabia RS PETROL 1.4 TSI 132 kw CAVE / CTHE 2010-2012 then also - 2012 on*

for some suspension parts and the likes.

Too often the computers show the wrong parts

......................................

I needed new standard front Springs as i had a broken Driver Side and they delivered the wrong springs,

not a matching pair.

Some sites show cheap enough by registration number but can not get the parts right for the car.
