Diesel Scout

Featured Replies

I sometimes wonder if paying outright for a car is the right thing to do when deals like this are on the table.

The same provider will do a Scout for £120 per month with, if my memory serves me, around £1600 deposit over two years!  Sounds too good to be true...

Well, it's for 5000 miles per year, which is not diesel territory in my eyes, and nowhere near enough for me (although if you're only keeping it for 2 years I'm sure the DPFs fine). Biggest problem for me is that if you change anything you lose the "special offer" status. I put the mileage up to 15000 mpa and the monthly cost went up to £427 (with a £6,400 initial payment)!

£16,400 for 2 years motoring is definitely NOT a good deal. I agree that there may be some great deals out there, but only if you happen to be in the 1% of the population that they suit (i.e. the 1% of population that doesn't drive much and probably wouldn't have gone for that car in the first place!)

The exception is probably if it's a "toy" and therefore not your main drive. Back to the Golf R......

Like lots of VW group cars (Golf R anyone?) the Scouts are typically cheaper than PCP to lease anyway but some very good deals on the 150 and 184 Scouts have appeared over the last few weeks.  Many other contract hire companies are offering very similar deals (check out contracthireandleasing.com).

These deals do tend to come and go and only on certain models.  They work well if you're looking to change vehicles in the near future and can sign up.

The mileage issue is easily overcome.  You simpy take out the lease on 5k per annum with the expectation of paying the 7.2p per mile excess when you hand the vehicle back.  If you've got a good deal in the first place this shouldn't be an issue but you need to factor it into your overall 2-3 year costs.

As I recently discovered with my Golf GTD on PCH you can swing this further in your favour.  By speaking to VWFS you can modify your monthly payment to reflect your true anticipated mileage.  For a small monthly uplift I'm now effectively paying 4p per mile for my excess mileage.
