These new speed cameras mentioned on top gear...

Featured Replies

I have never heard of them, does anyone have any details?

Thanks.... thought it was something "stealthy" doesn't seem like anything new to me....

I went passed the ones on the M25 in Kent this morning, the speed limit was reduced to 50. There were plenty still going at 70. However, if the idea is to reduce speed to aviod accidents a big bright yellow camera will slow drivers down, a grey unmarked camera will make money, but will leave cars travelling faster than considered safe.

replace stealth in stealth camera to wealth ;)

It leaves them travelling fast for a while until enough points gets them a ban,

& they might have time to consider future behaviour when they get their licence back, and some might need to see if

they can get a new job if it involved driving for a living.

Word will soon spread among drivers that do it as part of their living, and others,

forums and the likes will spread the word.

If it is raising money it will be public money it will be raising.

Maybe paying the persons Mortgage interest if they lose their job because they lose their licence.

I have been on the M25 on the six lane section near Heathrow at 4am and the gantry speed limits have just changed to 40 with a 'queue caution warning'. All I can see in front of me is six lorries and four cars. Do I brake from 70 down to 40 as I pass under the gantry, ease off and brake gently down to 40 and hope the camera doesn't flash or carry on at 70? A further 200 yards passed the gantry I can see the next gantry displaying NSL signs, still only six lorries four cars and me on a six lane piece of motorway.

It is up to you, free world, and take the gamble of no ticket.  So you decide, you are the driver.

I'll slam the brakes on to make sure I'm bang on 40 when I pass under the gantry and wait for someone else to slam into the back of me. :wonder:

I do not think you will now, will you?

crash for cash?

A good driver would spot you hurtling towards the camera, and would have dropped back slowing in a controlled manner to pass the camera at the right speed, and be nowhere near you...

Yep, you're right, you'll have additional passengers boarding via your boot.

I vaguely remember it being said when they were installedthat the first gantry of a speed limit change is not enforced, but the second always is.

Seems like a reasonable approach, but we'll never know if it's actually true.
