  • couldn't agree more with the above - sounds like the guy has actual experience of both. I know from ownership of 330 and 340bhp fwd hatches and 330bhp awd cars how they differ in the real world. Stage

  • If you read the brochures of both cars you'll see that the Golf R 5 door DSG weighs 1525 kgs, but includes a driver (68 kgs) and luggage (7 kgs)   The vRS TSi DSG 5 door hatch is quoted as weighing

  • Not to stir the pudding bowl but I am also in the camp that thinks 330-340hp for a mapped TSI is quite generous...not saying its impossible but I think v early 300's are what most will see with a very

The price will be the key. Being a VW, this will be a good couple of grand more than the vRS.

The biggest problem with the Golf GTI / GTD for me is the seats... you've got to spend the £2k or whatever it is for the leather in order to get rid of that tartan crap.

For interest, i specd up a golf Estate with similar equipment to the vrs i have on order. Bearing in mind it had none of the shiny bits of the vrs (big alloys, brakes, variable rack etc) and 'only' 150 bhp, it was over 3k above the cost of the vrs. The price difference for the above gtd version will be a couple of grand again i would expect

just making a couple of guesses on the price...

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF DIESEL HATCHBACK 2.0 TDI GT 5dr 15 - £24,300.00

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF DIESEL    ESTATE 2.0 TDI GT 5dr 15 - £24,995.00

Estate - £695 premium

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF DIESEL HATCHBACK 1.6 TDI S 5dr 15 - £19,595.00

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF DIESEL    ESTATE 1.6 TDI S 5dr 15 -  £20,290.00

Estate - £695 premium

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF DIESEL HATCHBACK 2.0 TDI GTD 5dr 15 -  £26,615.00

so maybe - £27,731 ???

And a vRS Estate comes in at £25,170.

I wonder what the equipment difference is....

I'd like to have them in my vrs instead of the standard vrs seats. mind you, I'd love the sports seats available in other parts of Europe as well. lot more discrete, and they can be heated too . Although I don't think they are fitted in vrs's currently. but it would be a nice option.

On my favourite "let's see what new cars come out and show me pics" website: http://www.netcarshow.com/volkswagen/2015-golf_gtd_variant/

they quote a price of of 31,975€ which would be just under 24 grand, I doubt that price is correct because in Germany and Luxembourg the VRS TDI manual is about 31,000€ (incl VAT). Maybe the the price is without VAT, but that would add more then 5000€ to the price?

Anyways, I have to say that I was underwhelmed by the pics of the R-variant, but the GTD doesn't look bad (or maybe it's simply the choice of colour), but it's still a VW Golf. I find the VW (except for the Scirocco and maybe the Beetle) quite boring.

To be fair the Golf is a little better put together, also in terms of kit you do get ACC, front sensors, colour computer and better interior lighting thrown in over and above a vRS.

Have to say one of these would be very tempting indeed...followed a GT spec one this morning and thought its a nice looking car.

....only downside compared to the hatch ive spotted so far....its to come with 17's and not the 18" Nogaro wheel. The Nagaros are optional.

Oh absolutely. I don't fault the VW quality. My Scirocco is rock solid, no squeaking vibrating etc. Compared to the 3 year older Seat my sister has..worlds apart.

I am curious to see how the Octy will be as it will be compared to the Scirocco and an Audi from 2002.

But I can't justify (for myself) paying much more for what I consider a less exciting car, with basically the same tech. As for the options that is very difficult to compare as for example the front sensors on the VRS are standard in Luxembourg, ACC is optional for both GTD and VRS.

Hi Tom,

Indeed I think in fairness to the Skoda its well enough bolted together, but its just a bit more basic in its construction.

My theory with the Octavia is that it doesnt rattle a great deal as there is less to rattle, if that makes any sense...ultimately I think compared to a Golf there is perhaps a little less build integrity for want of a better phrase.

I dont personally care much as my car cost a good few K less than an equivalent Golf GT estate so Im happy but even now if I compare my Elegance with my (now much older) Mk6 Golf GT the Golf still felt more solid and more expensive even if it was not quite so well styled or flash with touchscreens, colour computer and other toys.

Im the same....with my own money and given that Skodas own finance packages are usually ALOT better than VW's I have no doubt through finances alone id end up with a vRS TDI instead but given a no money no object choice it'd be the Golf.

Also hear you with spec...in the UK the Golf gets ACC which is quite good as were usually quite hard done by in the UK for standard kit...seemingly less so now with the launch of MQB based cars.

ACC... are we talking adaptive cruise control or adaptive chassis control?

I have the latter on my current Passat cc and after the initial fun, ive barely touched it in 4 years. Cruise control (don't have adaptive as yet) on the other hand... I used often...

My VRS hatch was in for a clean today and just around the corner is a VW dealer.

Went and sat in the new Passat and a Golf Estate and have to say when I got back in my VRS, in certain areas my VRS felt more solid.

I've had 3 VW Golfs, all GTI's and one special Edition, GTIED30, plus a passat R36 and 2 of the VW's were the most unreliable cars I've ever had (The R36 was the worse!). Rattles, creaks and plagued with mech problems and the like. So in my humble opinion and for me at least, VW build quality and a Golf being better put together are just a myth, some yes maybe lucky, I for the most part was not (and that's after having 4 x VW's).

So I get back to my nice clean VRS and walking up from the rear of the car, opening the drivers doors to settle in to a lovely place to spend time and as I said before, I didn't feel short changed for a second!

(The R36 was the worse!). Rattles, creaks and plagued with mech problems and the like.

I had a B6 Passat TDI140 sport and by 100K it was on its second engine, had about 4 handbrake buttons, the steering column fault and a knocking subframe...thankfully most of the expensive was before I bought it. The car still felt much more solid(possibly due to the extra weight) and comfortable than the vrs although its entertainment system was outdated due to its age. Mine didn't squeek at all though and at 100k felt just as fresh to drive as the vrs, possibly a bit more composed

Or seat Leon fr estate. Cheaper than the vrs and golf and better specced than both especially with the free technology pack they're still offering. I've defected from skoda to seat for that very reason. I await all the responses to put down the seat........

The price will be the key. Being a VW, this will be a good couple of grand more than the vRS.

But if you buy on PCP the better residual value will probably mean an identical or lower monthly cost.

It's only polite to put the seat down after use.

But in all seriousness, I quite like the Leon, but it and the Golf are just nowhere near as big as the Octavia, and I need the space.

Not with VW's interest rate on PCP deals...

I like the look of this Golf, I was considering the new Passat GT Estate, it comes with a twin turbo diesel option and 4 motion at a whopping £37K, the Golf estate looks like a good compromise to me.

Blimey you can tell who the Skoda faithful are. As much as I really like my first Skoda, which is a fully loaded VRS, it is categorically not up to VW standard in terms of ride quality, interior materials and brand kudos (or snobbery)

The Octavia is ideal for my needs which is space, kit, performance and value for money. Had the Golf GTD been about at order time I might have gone that way as the boot space is virtually the same which is important for me.

I've had 3 VW's and 2 Audi's over the years and they were all bulletproof. I fully expect the Skoda to be the same.

Must give you credit for the witty response lol!

Boot space was the main factor for me which the Leon is the same as the octavia (think there is a few litres of a difference) - I'm talking about the estate models. The Leon hatch is significantly smaller than the octavia. Will admit it is slightly smaller inside than the octavia but personally it still has more than adequate space.

But if you buy on PCP the better residual value will probably mean an identical or lower monthly cost.

Seat worked out cheaper for me than the octavia. Didn't price a golf as they didn't offer an estate with the 184 engine.

My wife has the previous model leon fr and it's fantastic to drive and well specd... So i considered both the leon St fr and the octy Estate. However, both worked out similar on lease deal but the octy won out based on the choice of options i wanted (no kessy or heated screen on the leon). Had those been available on the leon, i probably would have gone that way

Must give you credit for the witty response lol!

Why, thank you!

It's not so much the boot space that swung it for me, but the space in the cabin.  I will admit to not having seen a new Leon up close, but compared to the Golf, the Octavia has much more space in the front (the Golf seemed cramped to me) and the amount of rear leg room in the back seems like it is on a par with something like a Maybach...
