DSG and Hills

Featured Replies

Hi I have searched around this forum and other sites.

When going down steepish hills at say 60 mph, the gear box drops down to lower gears and consequently, the revs go up ( well they would, would't they ).

I am aware that I could simply use manual possibly control some the engine breaking. Others sites have said this a normal operation for a DSG.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Does it only do this after you have used the foot brake going down hill?. My wife's Octavia used to do it, but only if you braked, then took your foot off the brake, it seemed to know you might want engine braking so downshift automatically.

It is normal. It has an inclination sensor so it knows when you're going up or down hill and changes gear accordingly.

I think the only way to avoid is to use manual mode.

Agree.... Mine does on the hill I go down out of the village... I always switch to manual at the top, although it is steep, you can still go down at 50MPH so going to 3rd is a bit much... Always manual change to 4th

Switch back to auto at the bottom..

Yes normal behaviour. Living where I do its a useful feature I use most days... In a manual I would be controlling the speed of the car myself with the gearbox in a similar gear so I'm happy that it does it.

I suppose it's just something people get taught to do during their lessons when you have hills like ours.
