Best way to launch a VRS?

Featured Replies

Does the 7 speed DSG come with launch control? Also I've never drove an automatic before other than a jaguar f type for three minutes so does anyone want to offer me some tips?

No they do not have launch, they have Wheel Spin & bogging down with not good tyres on a not good surface.

So you might want TC off to save power cut,

and try them your self, and see what is what.   & the gearbox might change once you drive it, as it learns your style.

So maybe try the Car, see what tyres are on, be aware there might be Torque Steer,

& once you have tried one, then maybe see which launch style suits you.

A little roll and then boot might work well on the road.

Fastest off the road 'Maybe'  in some cars,

Stop, Into Manual, select 1st, TC off,  boot it and force the car to do the changes, do not shift until going to 5th at over 100 mph.

PS.

When collecting it for the first time, maybe best go fill with 99 RON, Check the Tyre Pressures, & set the TPMS,

and get used to the car before giving it lots, see how it is, and how it sounds.

Into sport mode, handbrake up , raise the rpm to about 2000 , drop the handbrake and apply the throttle (depending on the grip) , once the car shifts into second you can pretty much floor it certainly in the dry.

Prepare to be amazed disappointed :)

If you are collecting the car from Arnold Clark,

Check the Spare Wheel is in the Boot, & the Tools.

& Dip the Cars oil while cold if the engine is cold, see where it is on the Dip Stick,

& later do a Cold Dip.

As to 'S' and raising the rpm, and that type of Sprint or Lauch, i would give that a miss, because disappointment is assured.

'D' will do you fine, and in 'S' or 'D' with TC on, you can expect to hear the Bang that you might get with the XDS.

Surely the best way to launch it is to stand it on its end, light the blue touch paper and stand well clear...... :notme:

A rolling start always worked best for me,

It's a tricky but rewarding car to get off the line.

TC off.

DSG in Manual +/- mode

Modulate throttle off the line to limit wheel spin and then give it full throttle when into second.

Ill do the checks when i pick it up George.

Ill be double checking everything before I sign any documents!

Is it safe to put my left foot on the brake whilst holding the revs?

Can the paddle shifters be used instead of the gearstick to change in Manual mode?

I asked the same question before I bought mine.  Have to agree with George and go with the manual mode, TC off  and let the car do the changes but go when the lights turn to amber.....

Off a cliff?

The Brake pedal pushed cuts power to the engine, (best not trying Brake & Throttle on the move.)

and at start a DSG can give a delay from Foot off the Brake and flooring the throttle, (a complaint road testers made with the DSG, it is not an issue when you understand, the DSG)

but that is why the Hand Brake holding it is maybe preferable to the foot brake for 'Launching'..

& also you have Hill Hold Control, and you can have the Brake with the Foot, or the Hill Hold with a Firm Press of the Brake pedal.

Practice should make perfect, and then what suits you.

A little cold around the Strathclyde Area just now, so maybe best just get used to keeping your left foot away from the pedals, and get home safely.

*Once you have the Owners Hand Book, read page 101 'Dynamic Shift Programme.*

Thankyou. I don't plan on doing any tricks whilst I'm up there. I'll wait til I'm back in Yorkshire and on a private road before I try anything.

good tyres ;) in the summer I have my track day tyres on, and simply put it in drive and floor the throttle, away you go , no issues :) this is what I will be doing at the santa pod meet! the vid below I had maxxis Z1's on, a good summer tyre (but not a track day tyre) and got the perfect start, just a squeek of wheelspin, with no loss of traction, no axle tramp, and no bogging down ;)
