1.6 TDI economy Normal vs Sport mode

Featured Replies

My new to me O3 had done about 1000 miles in my hands with a total of 12k on the clock. I regularly do a trip of around 60 miles and end up with an indicated 62 mpg, probably about ten times in total, with little variation on that mpg figure. Today the car was in Sport mode, as opposed to normal and the end figure was 69 mpg. We also have a Golf GTI in the household and that is more economical in Sport mode too.

Any thoughts?

I also leave mine in sport and don't suffer any loss in economy. I also prefer the incresed throttle response and heavier steering which suits my driving style and the mix of roads on my commute so its a no brainer for me!

A short, but powerfull accelerations should be more efficient than a slow and long acceleration.

I agree - I tried all 3 settings and "Economy"'s throttle lag just made me press harder so was counter-productive - I get between 58 and 64 mpg indicated (more like 58 at present in the winter) which translates to around 2mpg less real-world, so averaging around 60mpg "true".  I still drive economically, just prefer Sport throttle and steering.

That's what I would think of using eco mode etc. The throttle is dumbed down so surely just encourages you to press harder?

An engine is more efficient at full throttle under load so acceleration should be done quickly to get up to speed then change up to the appropriate gear (block changes often work well in this case) to maintain speed with the lightest possible throttle. Prolonged light acceleration can often use more fuel.

I've found no difference. - but have decided I prefer the sport mode.

That's why mine only has one mode ;)

In my few months of ownership the best 'On board computer' MPG occured ( 69 )on the run imediately after a DPF regen but after a couple of days went back to similar 58-62 region.  Dont know if it's linked.  Keep in Sports mode and see if it goes back  to about 62  or not and report back.

Same here, with eco mode it gives me around 58-60 MPG however in Sport it shows around 62 MPG. Then, whats the point of "eco" function.

Could be your driving style suits the Sports Mode better that the Eco mode?

I know my vrs is better in normal than eco. Sport would probably be Better but u prefer the throttle in normal. Smash it to speed the cruise carefully and read the road seems to return an average that is 3mpg Better than when I'm in eco mode

It certainly feels a bit sharper in sports mode but must say your overall fuel consumption figures are rather better than mine!

In summer conditions I'll get maybe 53 to 54mpg mainly urban and at very, very best driving gently at around 60mph on country roads or motorways I might just get to 60mpg. I've seen the display show 72 mpg once when i was driving downhill at 55-60 mph on a motorway late at night and right now under winter conditions on my usual route to work I'm just under 50mpg, I know it would do better if i were on motorways etc more than town roads.

You might be right there. I am going to try MGs on all three modes and see the difference.

I see on the form, members seem to getting more MPGs on Sport than Eco, how does Normal mode behave when it comes to the fuel consumption?
