Lots of white smoke since first service

Featured Replies

My VRS TSI had it's first annual service on Thursday. Since then it has kicked out plumes of white smoke whenever I floor the accelerator. Even at idle and with the engine well up to temperature there is excess smoke. Oil level appears fine (not overfilled) and performance is normal but there is definitely a lot more smoke.

Any ideas?

Is it definitely smoke or could it be steam?

Is it definitely smoke or could it be steam?

Too much of it and too thick to be steam.

The Dealers can look at it next week when it is back in to fix a radiator leak, a rattly sound generator, and a completely stopped stop/start system. I have never owned a car with so many niggles in it's first year. It's already had a water pump replaced.

Just checked oil level again after allowing the engine to settle for 30 mins. It is 6 or 7mm above the max level so perhaps it has just been over-filled a bit.

edit: According to the manual I should see an "Oil Level Too High" warning if it is too hign. No warnings.

wow that seems quite a lot. With all the niggles you had, maybe a defective oil-level sensor is another one.

Not being an expert in engines, but I wouldn't drive around with too much oil for another week unless I got the allclear by phone from the dealer. That way it comes down to him if there is some subsequent damage.

Triple check its not steam...I have the same and did a thread...search 'white smoke'....it was water vapour in the exhaust system and there is a video of a similar thing in the thread. My dealer confirmed the issue....

If it's white smoke I say your head gasket broke what's the coolant level like? And is there while oily gunk around the oil cap and with it running and coolant cap off is there air bumping in the coolant?

If these then I would get it to Skoda if not then I keep a eye on it

Coolant needs to be topped up every now and again but the dealer located the source of a small coolant leak (part needs ordering). Coolant level is okay today and there is no gunk anywhere, just too much smoke. Problem is most noticeable within 3rd gear and above when flooring it in the mid-range. I'll call the Dealer on Monday. It is strange how it has only occurred immediately after its first server, where the only thing of note changed is the oil.

You say the coolant system is okay so the only thing it can be is the dealer has over filled the car with oil and some of it got into the exhaust system and its being burnt in the exhaust manifold

If it was on the manifold though, would it be more prominent accelerating hard in 3rd gear :-/

Surely it would just smoke when warm?

Aaah, unless it squirts (not quite right, but you know what I mean) when you accelerate hard and the exhaust burns it off...... In which case.... That's what you said

As you were, I'll keep quiet again :-D

It seems a bit better after a long run today when I gave it a fair amount of welly. There's still a little more smoke than I would like, but not the plumes of past two days. My guess is that oil was over-filled, but will get the dealer to check next week. Car sounds and pulls normally so I doubt whether it is anything too serious.

Nice to know that the car is getting better
