Time for new ABS unit maybe?

Featured Replies

The mongrel hasn't been driven for a while and also has had battery issues whilst being stood.

Picked it up today, sadly handing back the Rolls Royce :( and a couple of times I started getting the ABS,ASR and red handbrake light flashing at me, combined with some beeping too.

VCDS had a few ABS controller intermittent comms faults, and also battery voltage faults.  Car is driving fine apart from that.

Car battery has now been fully trickle charged and I will be going for a big run tomorrow.  Just wonder if I should start looking out for a replacement ABS unit?  Guess the ABS controller is one of the few things that are original in my car.  It's 14 years old now :D

I wouldnt think so, probly put it down to the battery.

Even if the battery has been charged, it could still be weak. Keep an eye on it and see how it goes.

Clear all fault codes and keep the battery charged up and you'll be finez

That's basically what I have done.

With a trackday in 4 weeks, she needs to be tip top.  And I still haven't got the rear wheel bearings changed or new rear brake calipers on.....  :(

All relitivley easy jobs though.

Just getting the time to do the jobs I bet, and at this time of year when it's mostly -2... No one can be botherd for DIY! :D

Well, the car threw another wobbly this morning during a 3 point turn.  ABS, ASR, PAS and handbrake light all on, and speedo reading 0 for the remainder of the trip. :(

Think I will need a ABS unit from a 2004 Fabia vRS to have reasonable confidence of compatability (bearing in mind my current ABS unit is TDI 2001 and the wiring / main ECU is all vRS 2004.....)

As said a bad battery can cause all these problems especially when it is put under a lot of stress, mine used to do the same when I turned my hids on every now and again and yours did it when doing a three point turn (using the power steering pump a lot) also putting extra stress on the battery. So the battery or alternator would be my first things to look at

As a quick fix (to get your Speedo back and lights off the dash) just turning my headlights off and restarting the car worked.

Hope this helps

I do agree still, a bad battery could cause the faults still. Use your vagcom and check again, see if faults are anything like low voltage or power supply etc.

OK - I will have a check.  If it's an intermittent "no communications" error (which was amongst the codes last time) I fear it's replacement ABS unit time.  It's making sure I get one which is compatible though.  I need to ensure ideally it comes from a 2004 Fabia vRS.

I'm sure a man of your skill can source one then, your always breaking them for parts!

Never broken a Fabia vRS though!  It would be convenient perhaps to look out for one now. :D

Having it play up whilst doing a 3 point turn would make me think of a battery/charging problem, as the steering can demand a lot of current.
