Dead turbo?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

So the car is a 56 plate mk1 1.9 tdi PD, 155k miles.

Driving back through town, the car suddenly lost power and it sounded like the turbo began "wheezing". no engine management light initially. As I was near home, I managed to get it back. By the time i got it home the EML came on, i read the codes as p0299 and p0101. There is an horrendous amount of clattering going on now, and it sounds like a tractor!

There is no sign of any oil leaking, and no smoke from the exhaust.......

Engine off and waiting for 30 mins, then back on hasn't cleared the limp mode .....

I can't find any boost leaks, and the sheer amount of clattering makes me think it's a gonner!

Any thoughts?

If it is a dead turbo, how big a job is replacing it? I have a mechanic whose labour rates are sickeningly low, so it could be an option. The car is in good nick otherwise, and has not long had the flywheel and clutch changed, so I would be inclined to sort it rather than write it off.

Thanks.

I have been looking around and the rattle I have seems consistent with camshaft failure, which appears to be not uncommon with these engines.

What are the chances of turbo underboost and camshaft failure happening at the same time?

Hi again,

Does anyone know how I can identify whether the camshaft/cam lobes have failed. I want to try to isolate the problem to see if it is worth fixing......

Thanks

The lobes on the cam can wear prematurley it wont be a case of being perfect one minute and then rattling like hell the next, you would notice noise / misfiring getting worse over time. I think your problem lies elsewhere.

It was definitely sudden - the engine was running just fine, then pulling out of a junction....gone!

I know the BXE engines are prone to conrod failure - I'm not too sure if this could be the cause?

I'll try to get a video with the engine running, perhaps that will help to diagnose.

Re: p0299 fault code - could this have caused the car to go into limp mode, or the other way around - limp mode triggered an underboost fault code?

If it was a conrod I cant see it would have got you home unless you were only yards away!! Is it still running on all 4 cylinders or does it tick over really lumpy like its going to die?

Here it is......

Here it is......

That doesnt sound nice does it!! I think the first thing I would check is the timing as it sounds like a valve clipping a piston, possibly the belt has jumped a tooth but that is only my opinion, maybe someone on here has had the same thing before? What I wouldnt do is run the car anymore as it seems to be still running on all 4 cylinders you MAY have got away with any major damage up till now.

Whereabouts are you by the way?

Thanks for your help with this. I'm in cardiff.

It would make some amount of sense for the belt to have slipped, it is due a new belt anyhow. I could have just talked myself into it mind.....

is it easy to check the timing on these engines? I'll check the belt condition in the week when I get chance.

How can I check for valve damage?

It would be nice of it had jumped a couple of teeth but not done any major damage....New belt and away we go! Here's to wishful thinking!

You say it's due a new belt how due was it as that sounds terminal and if it's a valve hitting a piston that engine will need head off to sort valve
