I'm completely and utterly confused and it seems no matter where i look on the internet, it only serves to confuse me further.

 

I have a caravan with a MTPLM (maximum technically permissable laden mass) of 1300kg.  I have just ordered the above vehicle and now i'm wondering if i need to do a B+E test and whether i should have done it years ago with all the different outfits i've had.

 

I passed my test on the 22nd July 1997.

 

Can anybody help with a photo of the weight plate on the exact same vehicle please?

Regret I can't help with a VRS plate picture but if it's the rules that are confusing not the weight:

 

You can tow anythning with a B licence where the maximum permissible mass of the vehcile + trailer maximum mass is 3500kg or less

And the maxium permissible mass of the trailer is less than the unladen weight of the car

 

I can't find either of the relevant numbers in the manual!

 

B+E test isn't particularly difficult 

Ok, so i may be getting somewhere.

 

In the brochure it states 'max weight' which i presume to be MAM (maximum authorised mass)?  This is 1973kg.  The caravan has a MAM of 1300kg so these two combined equals 3273kg.  Is this correct? 

 

The weird bit comes when i look at the Rapid brochure (our other car) and it states that with a 1300kg caravan, this would also be within the law.  However, it also states that it has a max braked towing weight of 1100 so presume 200kg too light for our particular caravan?

 

B*gger me - does it have to be quite so confusing?  It also opens it up to unsafe towing on the roads as just because it's 'safe' doesn't mean it's ACTUALLY safe.

I came within 50kg of the limit with my E60 (1585kg unladen)

Yes, you also have to be below the max towing weight of the car. That seems to be 1600 or 1800kg depending on your gearbox so you're fine with that.

 

Before I did my B+E I had a Mondeo - I had to get th hatchback as the estate was 6kg too heavy for me to tow my trailer with.
