New yeti detailing

Featured Replies

Hi my new yeti is on its way do I trust the dealer to do the paint protection or do I have it done privately

£350 quoted by dealer

I'm sure a lot of people can do it for half that and probably do a better job. :) I know I would.

You can probably buy the same stuff from eBay. For a twentieth of the price.

I don't think the issue is the product necessarily but the skill and tools to apply it. :)

I had the 3M product put on mine ......not cheap but if you're keeping it like I am, worth it IMO if only for the worry free aspect......and we don't have salted roads either.

I could help you do it if you like. I have all the necessary equipment.

No cost!

This is a dealers 'perk' - as others have suggested £10 worth of product, an hour of the valeters time and £250 profit for the dealer!

For that money you could get a top job done by a professional detailer!

Good luck!

Needs to ask this question in the Car care and Style section, will get a  good response there.

Not sure exactly when your car is arriving. March plate change over is fast approaching, so even if the person your dealer is using is proficient and diligent, I don't reasonably think he would have enough time to do it properly.

As others have said, you can buy the genuine kits (Autoglym Life shine)for about £15. Have a look on Detailing World to see recommends for detailers/valeters in your area, and any recommendations they have.

There is a Briskoda member (ChrisR-look in the Maintenance sub forum)who details professionally, he may be close by, or recommend someone local.

At time of purchase I was asked if I wanted this done, I said no. Upon collecting the car I found a complete kit in the boot still in its wrapper. When I asked the salesman about it, he told me to keep it as it costs pennies.

Only 1.5 hours away, if you fancy popping over to Bingley, West Yorks

I can do it for you at less than half that.

Exactly what he said :)

If you buy the materials, you can always redo areas that are vulnerable, eg lower parts of the doors and the bonnet edge.

These are still subject to stone chips, and won't be covererd by any warranty.

Do these say after the last salt goes onto the road, and you have washed it off, and then before the winter before they start to salt, and maybe once mid summer, but not on full sun.

I am aiming to do mine 3-4 times a year...

No difference to my normal car waxing, my other car is 20 years old... and still looks great.

Exactly that.

Paint protection is just a bit of fancy car polish.

It doesn't actually do anything to really protect the paint.

My other car (Smart Roadster) had £400 worth of paint-protection applied by the original owner and they paid out to have all the annual inspections done etc.

When I bought it after 10,000 miles it looked EXACTLY the same as every other Smart Roadster I had seen - same level of sheen, same level of stonechips etc.

When I got to 75,000 miles I paid out to have the front of the car repainted as it had dulled, become stone chipped etc. When I took to the bodyshop and said I was disappointed given that it had had paint protection applied when it was new they just laughed.

When you say paint protection is just fancy car polish

What exactly do you mean?

Polish and Sealant are two entirely different products

Having polished mine and sealed it on day 0, when I do it again after the salt, do I start with polish and reseal again, or do I have to remove the sealant?

I think I know what you mean...Apologies

Polishing is just cleaning the surface of the paint with Polish and preparing the surface for the sealant or wax

Ok polish, wax, sealant - whatever. It's just the same sort of stuff you can buy in halfords for a tenner or less and do yourself. Just when dealer sells if it's branded with some "exclusive" brand name like "supagard" and it suddenly costs a fortune.

There's obviously a huge margin to be made on body/trim protection programmes.  I've just ordered a new Yeti,  and part of the package was a Gardx Protect Vehicle Protection System,  normally priced at £399,  given to me as a sweetener for £150.  I took up the option as I had a Safeguard system applied to my present Yeti when new for £322,  and this car is still in pristine condition two years on.  Not a mark on it inside or out.  Some of that is down to very careful ownership,  but the finish is much better than it would have been without the treatment.

Polish, Wax and Sealant are NOT the same sort of stuff at all, they are all different products

Some of the protection coats available from dealers (Supergard, Autoglym Lifeshine) are just sealant ....applied against the clock by Dealer valeters..They often do not have the time to prepare and apply properly..The same coatings can be bought on eBay, but again, they must be applied properly or the sealant will not bond and will fail within weeks

Other coatings that are now becoming more poular are Ceramic Sealants like GardX, which require even more preparation..again Dealers dont have the time to do it properly

Its all about preparation..This is fundamental...youre lucky if its done well let alone properly

Also...Dont forget, Salesmen are on massive commission and will often reduce the price to get a sale

I hope I have explained it better for you

I'm with the others, if you are serious about it ask the dealers to only remove the transport packaging and not touch the paintwork, then pick it up and take it straight over to somewhere like ChrisRs to have it done professionally with really decent equipment and products, or have them go over to the dealers before delivery and do it then, like he said products like GardX are almost as much about preparation as application which takes time, that is something the dealers won't give their valeters much of at all. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/343005-brand-new-car-prep/?hl=%2Bnew+%2Bcar+%2Bdetailing#entry4123279

I am not disputing that polish, was and sealant are all different products - what I am trying to say is that there is nothing special about what the dealers supply compared with what you can buy at a fraction of the cost from a high street retailer.

All great info keep it coming

looking at some of the products they are dearer on ebay than direct from the supplier ref:CarPro

Ok well a while back i brought guard x kit for 9.99 and that is what dealers was or is using. Purchased on Ebay. Whether the seller was a valeter who never used it who knows. It's hard to know the provenance of stuff on Ebay. Maybe he's in jail for it. .....
