Fuel Consumption with replacement engine

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Just noticed earlier that the average fuel consumption over a thousand miles of mixed driving is showing 31.7mpg according to onboard system. This is around 4 or 5 mpg less than the engine it replaced. I know I've been extremely happy with the replacement as it hasn't used oil at all in over 5k since engine change, and have also commented previously on rasping noise replacement engine makes. However I'm quite shocked to find the fuel consumption figure appears to have suffered.

Do the mk2 vrs use more fuel in the winter months? I know that sounds a bit of a silly question but I'm trying to work out why the fuel consumption would be different when the driving style and drivers haven't changed.

Richard

ps. I may have answered my own question in another thread by referring to going out for a blast lol

Don't forget new engine would be tight, before fully run-in.

How consistent have the type of journeys been.

Do you reset it before trips?

It does take longer for the engine to get up to efficient operating temperature in the weather you likely have been having.

you might do 10 miles before the oil is up to 80*oC, and it might never be above 86-88 on a longer trip.

Also tyre pressures need checking and set in the colder weather.

New oil as well with a new engine running in.

All reduces your economy maybe for a while yet.

? How many miles since the new engine was fitted?

PS

If i leave 'Average MPG' no.2 set and not reset.

it often shows 31.7 over extended times.

That is not how much fuel has been got out of each gallon though.

Thanks Keith, journeys consistent in the sense the car is still doing the same type of "work" as before i.e my wife still primary user for her work as a home carer so loads of short, stop and start journeys of little more than a mile at a time for her, with me it tends to be little more than 11 miles a day (5.5 each way) but all done on A road. Pretty much the same as before the engine change. I'm not really complaining as such I don't think, just surprised. But you don't buy a Vrs to worry about fuel consumption otherwise you buy the tdi I suppose.

George, it hasn't been reset over the last 1000 miles which is how I managed to come across this figure. I've realised as well that even on my longer (at least longer than when my wife uses it) journey to work that the car doesn't get to 80* or above, in fact it's probably lucky to see over 65*. I do tyre pressures every week along with other checks, including oil (once bitten and all that).

New engine now covered 5100 miles since being fitted.

I'm going to put it down to new engine still bedding in properly, and the type of running involved. And having asked the question I'm now going to set about just enjoying the wee car, I'm just an inquisitve so and so sometimes.

Come on Richard - man up, put the blame where it should be.

It's that Anne, she has gone manic since that New Engine installed.

Tell her to stop driving in those 9" heels,it's all about driving in style, with her - not driving style.

Enjoy you two, while the fuel is cheaper!!

vRS is a blast.

Sittingbull,

did you ever get to changing the tyres on the car for the winter?

After my new engine was fitted my mpg was the same but it is down 5-7mpg because of the cold weather! On days where the weather hits close to double figures it goes bk up!
