Anyone had a BMW 535D...

I think it should be said that 4x4 vehicles have a potential to be driven better compared to RWD or FWD but it all depends on driver skills. If you are clueless even in 4x4 on spikes you will going nowhere lol.

I never help people to pull their cars out of snow etc. I prefer to get behind the wheel myself and simply drive it out - usually works unless the owner managed to dig his/her car in up to the axles :)

Agreed, all modern cars can be driven in any weather condition. Drivers intrests and taste defines what capabilities you want from car and driving.

Choosing not to buy a RWD car in the UK because of how they handle in snow is utter madness. Obviously remote hilly area's exempt.

Since when did our climate suddenly be like Siberia? :dull:

In that case we should all buy amphibious cars or the Top Gear hover van because of the occasional flooding we have!?

Yes I now have a RWD drive and yes typically two months after picking it up we had the first snow for over two years and yes it did get stuck at the end of the road. :p But for the other 364 days this year I'll be fine and having much more fun than the FWD car it replaced.

No, Octavia goes better because of 4x4. Just saying my opinion of that RWD is fun and enjoyable on snow if tires are okay. Myself I didn't even considered of getting a FWD again. I enjoy driving too much and IMO it's not enjoyable driving if FWD tries to pull me in the ditch all the time when cornering on slippery road.

Sorry yeah, forgot you said 4x4. I shouldn't multitask haha

RWD is more fun yeah.

Just pretty terrible when it keeps on snowing n you have to abandon it cos you cant get home, and the Fwd's keep on going

Been there, done that

Ironically enough the last time I really got stuck was in a brand new demo Superb back in 2009, a sudden snowfall left me stranded on the drive with no hope of moving it.

Since I live in a valley any significant snowfall results in lorries jamming the roads up so winter tyres are of little benefit since the roads are blocked

Some drivers skills are a joke, true:).

The heavier the car the easier it is, simple laws of physics, just need to know how to apply them :). Just because it is beyond your capabilities doesn't mean nobody else is able to do it, relax :)

I know what i am doing when it comes to driving

I would class my driving as above average always had a half nippy motor and i know a rwd bmw (which i've had for 18months now) is no match in the snow for a fwd front engined car.

I know people that work for bmw and the first sign of snow they leave the bmw's at work and take the vans home. They are useless. (Bmw owner)

I don't even have to watch the video to know the right rubber makes the difference, not the drivetrain type.

Rubber does make a big difference yeah

But fitted with the same rubber, the FWD would go further in the snow than the RWD.

agreed, absolutely no doubt in my mind concerning that. :)

While RWD would be more fun (while it's moving anyway). (5-10mph drifts ftw!)

Its not fun when you try to set off, let the clutch out slowly n the back just slides with the camper of the road towards the railings though hahaha

In Finland people often uncovers their MBs or BMWs from carage when winter comes and leave FWDs waiting for spring. Many people even buys E36s just for winter fun.
