Anyone had a BMW 535D...

Featured Replies

Pretty much on the verge of selling the daily and moving onto something else.

Having a look around a 535D seems to tick the boxes I want.

Bigger, not slow, 30mpg+ and comfy. Anyone had one or any experience of one? Would be looking at a E60 around 2006 (might sneak a cheeky lci if I find a good one)

They seem to map well too, 380bhp and 570lb.ft give or take :P

  • Ref MPG. This is how my 530d behaved if driven with MPG in mind.    After 89.9 miles from a cold engine start, A roads, B roads and about 25 miles of motorway:   Then after messing about in Belf

  • Lol. Never heard such rubbish in my life

  • R35 and Bugatti Veyron are both autos , thought the autos are only suited for one-legged old ladies attitude had died a long time ago

Failed Thermostats is a big one, can't remember if the 535D has the issue swirl flaps or not, driven a couple. They go well enough for me standard, could happily live with one day in day out, not a massive fan of the BMW computer systems but it's better than nothing, not sure what kind of MPG it will pull though

Yes reading up I need to check both and make sure it gets up to temp without issue. Some owners (most I think!) also blank the swirl flaps. Also heard the computer system takes "some getting used to"

But then also heard they go well standard, arent epically bad on fuel and are a pretty nice car to be in. Which is really what I am after. Wish I could afford a lci but lucky to see one under 10k. Can't justify the 3k premium over the 2004 - 2006 model.

I thought reliability wise, the 530d is a better bet than the 335d?

Assume you mean 535d ;) Not heard that I have heard that everything costs rather a lot more for the 535D like the brakes etc. To be fair its more the idea of a big boat of a comfy car with 380bhp and will still maybe touch 40mpg on a very steady run (I see circa 60mpg+ from the Fabia with 200bhp atm!) that is temping me.

I seem to recall that too.

An old boss had a 530D, he test drove the 535D too but said he didn't see what you actually got for the extra outlay.

Neighbour loved his 335d.

Says he met a mk1 fabia vrs entering a dual carriageway though, and he couldnt keep up. Just left behind in a cloud of black smoke.

I want to know what that vrs had done to it haha

I'd go for the 530d for the simple fact the 535d is auto-only. Depends how much that annoys you I suppose :)

Something going wrong if a 335d couldn't keep up with a fabia!

To the op, I was told the difference between a 330 and 335 was a larger turbo? Don't quote me, that's just what I am told.

A friend has a 325d, a 61 plate, and it is a lovely place to be. B&O sound system, the little 'seat belt assist' arm that hands the seat belt to you, heated seats, very flash. Goes very well too. Not brilliant on the fuel mind you, and it is taking a lot of getting used to driving rear wheel drive. Rather him than me when he has to replace the tyres.

I'd say go for it though. Very nice car and a great reputation all around.

Its not a larger turbo.

The 30 is a single turbo and a 35 is a twin turbo. One large one and one smaller one for low revs to reduce the lag a big turbo gives.

He couldnt believe i either. Musta had some serious tuning. He knows his cars and knows his speed.

He had a honda fireblade up until last year, that woulda left the lot lol.

The 535d is a monster, it's quicker to 100 than a scooby of its day. It's right up there on my radar and I'd have one over the 30d every time.

A mate of mine went from a Scooby to a 57 535d , he does a lot of miles and his is on about 140k now , it goes through thermostats on a regular basis , he also had a failed dpf removed (they need replacing after about 110-130k and BMW wanted £2200) and remapped , I uprated the brakes for him. It will do 42mpg if driven steady on a run but spends more time doing 36mpg according to him

Cheers lads for the replies.

Fabia v 335D... yes the Fabia must be a bit quick. My Ibiza kept up... and I mean kept up with a 335D and its a tad quick (1/4 times of 13.5) so that Fabia must have had some serious power or the 335D I came up against was mapped up to hell (but I didnt think so at the time)

Reason for 535D is the 5 series seems to have more toys. The auto box doesnt put me off as a daily driver I want it to be a little lazy, comfy but still ok on fuel and not slow.

Not sure if I should stretch the budget and try and get a lci.

I dont see the point in a manual on a big diesel like the 535

Id have the auto too tbh.

I would in most diesels.

I have to agree it's not exactly going to be an Elise in the sense of being a "drivers car" so why not go lazy!

Petrol tanks are a big failure on bmws and are not a cheap item to buy. There again nothing cheap with bmws,

I dont see the point in a manual on a big diesel like the 535

it would be better if the offered a manual option, id have a manual one any day

Modern autos are so good now I cant see the point of manuals the autos are more fuel efficient , smoother , quicker and quieter

It's fine I would be buying a diesel :P

jks.

Voice of experience, or hearsay? I've found most things to be pretty reasonable. The only expensive thing was £50 for a short PAS pipe, but otherwise it's all acceptable.

(Brand new brakes/pads on both axles for £80-£100 on my 325i? Hardly breaking the bank!)

No difference in reliability between 530d and 535d

Both 3l 6cylinders just one has 2 turbo's instead of 1!

Swirl flaps are not an issue. Effected older bmws

Same here, just a shame that BMW didn't make a trong enough manual box to handle it :( even remapping a 530D you have to be modest as that is the main limiting factor :(

Swirl flaps still in 2008/2009 cars was around 2009 they stopped using them. 2004 the changed the diameter on the 6 cylinder to make them a bit larger and stronger (but still failures).
