Tyre damage - is it just cosmetic

Featured Replies

Hello all.

My wife just kerbed the sport!

My question to you is, do you think the chunk out of the tyre is just cosmetic or has it weakened it in some way?

Thanks as always, Alex

Thats fine , thats just what the thicker bit of rubber is designed to do

well its not fine but its what happens to me also when the wife drives my car ;)

It looks superficial, but as its on a sidewall and close to the bead it makes sense to be cautious and replace it sooner rather than later. My worry is that it will weaken the bead and increase the risk of a blowout.

That's a lucky escape. I wouldn't worry about that at all.

Tyre is fine, thats what the rim protector is for. I've done similar in the past and took my car to a tyre specialist who advised that it was perfectly ok.

You need to sort out the wheel though and at least put some lacquer over the damaged area, otherwise water will get underneath and in a month or so the wheel will look a right mess.

Thanks all, I did sand down the scrape and put some lacquer on. I may take that off again when I have more time and rub it down again and re paint and lacquer on in my garage with a warm wheel. The car lasted 4 months from new till this first incident, which was more than I expected.. Lol

Ps I have a crappy alloy repair kit, so when I do a proper job, I have protection in mind rather than looks. Is it worth putting silver paint on, or should I just stick to a lacquer coat? I'm wondering if the paint just adds another weakness.

If the sidewall was knackered, there'd be a bulge in it.

Not as bad as what I did [emoji19]

Poor wheels.

As the concencus states, the tyre is fine with the bulk of the damage restricted to the rim protector area so nothing to concern yourself about.

This is one of the thicker areas of the tyre as it's designed to take the 'pinch' of the rim when your tyres are running under pressure or running flat. Damage to the middle of the sidewall is the one to be concerned about as this is where the tyre's at its thinnest.

Re the wheel itself, last time I had damage very similar to this (limited to the wheel edge rather than the face) I just used a micro file to take away the roughness and 'round over' the area that was damaged, cleaned it with some spirit wipe and then just brushed on some clear lacquer and from anything further than 12" away it was near impossible to see.

Very annoying but simple to fix the wheel satisfactorily, but perhaps not so the wife's driving!

Many thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

chances are will be ok

just keep a close eye on it for any evidence of a bulge

if you do start to get a bulge swap it out asap

As with all Skoda polished (or diamond cut) alloys water will get behind the lacquer eventually, an inherently weaker design compared with traditional painted or powder coated alloys.

It usually happens on the cars third birthday (to the day!) just as the warranty expires.

I'm wondering if in a few years time, when the wheels are kerbed to death, if I could just paint the outer rims with black hammerite...

Would it stick?

I don't think it would look too pretty but you just need to key the surface with light sandpaper and it should stick. You could use the old fairy liquid trick so you don't need to remove the tyres.

I used this when I had my original Rapid and went for the Williams Clio look of blue with gold everything else. You just fire on loads of fairy liquid onto the tyre right up to the edge of the rim and it should catch all of the stray paint then wash it off once it's dry. I used a rattle can and it worked perfectly.
