thermostat easy job?

Featured Replies

hi all car cooling down like mad on motorway thermostat?

if so is it a pain to do?

Sounds like sticky stat resulting in car over cooling. I started to do mine myself but the weather beat me so I got my garage to fit the gen parts I bought. It's in a slightly awkward place so you'll need extensions and an elbow. It's not too bad if you've got the time and patience, which I didn't. Think the gen ones are about 35 on skodaparts at the moment. I did my sensor at the same time just in case, I know they're both gen now. I did find a good how to of a golf iv on a vw forum. On my phone at moment so a bit tricky to post link.

Oh and you shouldn't need to do a full drain of coolant, leave the top on the expansion tank.

oooh garage can do it sod freezing in cold lol

My sentiments exactly,I had hail showers and high winds trying to rip the bonnet off. Not ideal. Should be about an hours labour at the garage.

Its easy, get the haynes maual out and a torch. But quick so cheap at a garage.

Are you sure its not a sheared off impeller on the water pump. Does the car ever smell hot? You know the smell I mean?

Any I've seen, a sheared (or smashed) impellor causes overheating, not over-cooling.

I have only had it once, and there really was very few symptoms other than 'funnies' with the temperature in general. It got hot or cooled down randomly while driving, smelled hot sometimes and other times was fine. Then when I had a cambelt done, they showed me the impeller and it was not attached to the shaft. I didnt have any strange things happen afterwards.

Easy with a wobble bar and UJ.

I did mine in about 40 mins if that.

First attempt too !!

Doddle if you have done the usual deletes, done mine that often takes me longer to get the ramps and tools out than change the stat :D

40 mins is a good effort, took the garage that did mine longer than that. I didn't fancy doing it myself as it looked a bit of a pain to get to and I don't have a UJ adaptor.

I replaced mine with a Gates stat at a fraction of the cost of a genuine one (<£10), car now warms up much quicker and the water temp then stays bang on the middle of the gauge.

So? The gauge is very stabilised, and any temp between about 80 and 100C returns 88C.

yeah had pump and belt kit all done in dealer stuff last year  :)

No need for the sarcasm. Point was that replacing the thermostat fixed the problem (mine was doing the same as the OPs) and that the Gates thermostat seems to do the job just as well as a Skoda one but at a fraction of the cost.

Got a Gates in mine, six month old expecting it to pack up in 12 months if it's anything like the others I've had. Most of you will now say should of bought Genuine tried that twice. I now class the stat as a service item seem to be changing every 18 month's,

So far used,

1 Unipart

1 Q&H

2 OEM

1 Gates (current)

Always used OEM G12 coolant after flushing the system, just think my VRS has got an appetite for Thermostats. :dull:

Weird they keep failing on yours, Ive had the OEM one in for over 4 years with no problem

Did my Stat and CTS yesterday. Fairly easy with the correct tools. Temp constant 90 degrees and economy has returned.

i looked and with out right tools wasn't happening grrrr

You just need a super long 5mm Allen key. Or 1/4 inch extension with 10 mm socket or 5 mm allen attachment.
