remap + hybrid 130 mpg

Featured Replies

Hi,

About to buy a standard fabia vrs. All my diesels get remapped, with the fabia I'm considering fitting a hybrid then a remap.

Fundamentally this is a daily driver with the focus on mpg. So driven sedately would this setup give the same mpg as a standard car?

Thanks

Fitting a hybrid???  Do you mean you will be towing a Prius? :D

No point in fitting a hybrid turbo unless you have the supporting mods... These include

Front mounted intercooler £300-600

Uprated clutch and flywheel £600-1000

And with the extra power you also need to be able to stop and go round bends so your looking at another £500-1000 for braking and handling mods

Regarding mpg you'll probably find as a hybrid is boosting less to maintain speed etc it will acheive superior mpg to a standard car

My and my friend went a road trip once. My stock fabia = 53mpg.... His 220bhp fabia = 56mpg

my fabia run 224bhp running a ths cooler, hybrid turbo and milltek exhaust and tbh im not the lightest footed I was getting around 40mpg and that was with stock clutch and flywheel lasted over a yr and was still going strong until upgraded as for the standard brakes they were ****

Cheers guys. One of the reasons I didn't want to go too far with the mods was a fear economy would plumet.

I thought I might get away with 190ish through the side mount. I didn't realise that a fmic would take it to 220ish and economy would be actually improved.

Brakes are on my list. Clutch wise I was just going to drive sympathetically, when\if it goes I'd swap it for an uprated item.

PD150 turbo & FMIC nice mild map with a soft torque curve will yield you 185-190bhp be reliable and plenty quick enough for daily use

But from what I've seen pd130 hybrids can be had for the same money as stock 150s.

true but you will find a hybrid are naturally laggy

if you want the ideal road spec turbo/economy my personal choice would be the above, if you want more bhp fit a GTB series turbo (GTB1756vk) for a fast road car

Isn't there the ability to have two maps - one for economy, one for going placesthat bit quicker. And changing them over via vcds? Or am I imagining reading about that.

You could always go for a more economical map?

JRJG

Hi jrig yes you can have both maps i mapped my cousins vrs which is now mine around a year ago and supplied him with powergate which is similair to a bluefin and you can have 3 maps  on it, power economy and standard.

Ah I hadn't considered lag. You are right I do want a nice everyday driver. Turbo + fmic feels like a lot of money for 20bhp more than just a remap. Or will it drive considerably better than the figures suggest?

If you have to buy a new turbo, why not get a hybrid?

When I replaced the turbo on mine on the precautionary principle (the KKK wasn't knackered, but i didn't want shrapnel in my engine if it did go) I bought a hybrid Garrett 1749 on the correct BLT manifold from XMAN750 because it was the cheapest Garrett turbo available.

It makes no difference on an unmapped car because the unmapped car never calls for the extra boost available at the top end.

Ben at Shark told me he could get an extra 25bhp (190bhp vs 165bhp) with the hybrid over the stock KKK turbo if it was mapped correctly vs. the standard Shark stage 1 map. Torque has to be limited unless you uprate the clutch.

The choice of impeller in your hybrid is also vital in that it should match your driving characteristics. That's one benefit of a hybrid. You can, to a certain extent, match the impeller to your desired tuning outcome.

Little to no lag on a pd130/150 hybrid

The difference between mapped 170bhp (about the limit of the standard smic) and 220bhp is phenomenal! Night and day actually

Think a mapped vrs does a 1/4 mile in 15.5 - 16s and high 80mph terminals

With 220bhp i managed a 14.4s with 97mph terminal

Thanks for the info. 200+ would be nice. Id be inclined to go hybrid then if drivability isn't affect. Prefer to get a turbo and stay well inside its limits than push a pd150 to the edge to hit 200ish.

I've been looking at the xman turbos and they seem very good value. I can't find any horror stories either. Are they a good, reliable option? At least better than a standard 150?

It all depends on how heavy your right foot is regarding mpg, a good map also helps though(contact Faboka on here ;) )

Even with a gtb series turbo you can still see mid 50mpg on a run, but its so hard not to use the power available!

My commute is 40miles a day, majority A roads,240odd bhp gtb powered and I'm usaully getting 400miles to a tank of fuel.

And quite a lot of the journey is playing with salesmen in there 3ltr bmws! ;)

I'd either go for a standard pd150 turbo or a gtb1756vk of XMan. Wouldn't bother with a hybrid, they can't match a gtb for spool. But that's my personal view.

GTBs do look tempting. Aren't they more of a faff to fit. I.e. I'd need a different downpipe, exhaust, oil pipes etc? They seem to be less plug and play than a hybrid or a 150?

So many choices :(

I blew a standard genuine pd150 turbo up in 3 weeks fitted a hybrid lasted a yr and half with no issues took it off today and theres no play in it what so ever

Standard pd150 mapped to 1.65-1.7bar makes a lovely road car, quick spool no lag

As Faboka said hybrids of the above are laggy compared to GTB series

With a map on my pd150 leon i made 196bhp

I have also had a pd150 hybrid and id honestly say the lag is negligable

Is there much difference between the standard pd150 turbo and the GT1749vc hybrid (with the pd170 internals) that xman sells on here?

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/290864-garrett-gt1749vc-based-hybrid-turbo-for-pd130-asz-19tdi/

The pd150 starts to spool at about 1800-1900 rpm (the standard 130 is about 1500rpm), is the GT1749vc similar?

wja96, is this the turbo you are running? I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Yes, that is the turbo I'm running. Just in a BLT manifold so I can keep my EGR valve. The car made 148bhp when it was new (tested in 2006) and it made 149bhp after the turbo was replaced so almost no difference. Ben at Shark reckoned 180-195bhp was realistic with a custom map and no other mods but the torque would need to be carefully managed without a clutch upgrade.

It was fitted by Robinsons in Norwich (very good workshop - proper old-fashioned Skoda customer service!) and the only issue the technician had was he had to turn something round in the turbo however I think that's normal with Garretts onto PD engines. It's done maybe 25,000 miles since it was swapped out. I'm very pleased with it I have to say. I was downright cheap compared to a new or refurbished KKK from anywhere else.

I would love someone to explain why the hybrid option would be laggy (especially compared to a bigger turbo) as it seems counter-intuitive.

Dropped xman an email got a response straight back.

Explained what i was hoping to achieve, supporting mods etc and he recommended the following:

http://www.briskoda....blt-buk-230bhp/

Figure this with a Airtec FMIC, EGR delete and a remap should see a safe 200bhp+. Run it on the original clutch, see how it goes and up-rate if required.
