Bonnet gas strut

Featured Replies

Some months ago I bought a gas strut for the bonnet of my pre-FL Yeti on a Group Buy.  I never got round to fitting it.  I now have a new Yeti on order (FL, obviously);  does anyone know if the pre-FL bonnet strut will fit the FL model?

Superskoda claim they fit all Yeti versions, the photo on their website (fitted to a pre F/L) looks identical to what I fitted to our F/L

Thanks for that, Gizmo68.  Guess I'll hang on to it then,  and fit it to the new beast when he arrives.  I didn't think they'd have changed the overall shape of the bonnet and wing,  but I know the tailgate and back end is different so there was just that niggle in my mind.

Gizmo, are there any problems with the gas strut's force being exerted on the bonnet? I looked at getting one but just wondered about the loads.

At rest (bonnet shut), I imagine the strut isn't loading the bonnet unduly.

No adverse effect at all as far as I can see, SS recommend that you place your hand on the bonnet (where the strut mounts) whilst closing the bonnet, this seemed good advise the first couple of times you close the bonnet, but after it’s been fitted a few weeks it doesn’t seem necessary now IMO.

Thanks, Gizmo.

I can feel another Superskoda shopping exped coming on....

Top little mod!

Had mine on for 4+ years now with no issues

I don't know about that, the bonnet line is certainly higher on my FL compared to my pre FL and the new DRLs probably mean that the wings are different too.

I have had this strut from SS, but I had to drill the holes slightly to make it fit.It now works perfectly and is a useful mod.

I purchased a bonnet strut for my  2014 170 DSG Yeti Outdoor Elegance but once fitted by my garage they thought it put too much strain on the bonnet and hinges, did not line up correctly. Took it off and threw it in the bin ! - no problem using the standard rod support. Roger, AKA - Giiliwing. Nice cars

Have to say I agree with gilliwig - I don't really see the point of a gas strut for the bonnet.

Gas struts on tailgates are a good idea - as you regularly approach the car with your hand full of stuff and just want to open it and have it stay open. But I tend to approach the bonnet with nothing in my hands, open it, put the rod in place, and start doing whatever it was I intended to do.

Putting a gas strut on the bonnet just seems to be a mod for mod's sake to me.

Coming from a couple of Superbs I missed the strut straight away.

Obviously those that have never had one before will not miss it.

I fitted one to my first yeti and transferred it to my current one- It has worked reliably and has given me no problems. the fit is good and the convenience value matters to me- bits of bent rod are OK on old or very basic and cheap cars but I have moved on.Just as I replaced the old underlay around the battery of my old 140 elegance in favour of a proper battery box because for a time Skoda had hints of iron curtain about them despite producing cars fully up to free  world standards in every important respect. There are things like nylon shirts and similar from which I have moved on.
