replacing the front tyres

Featured Replies

Wrecked my alloy last week on a pot hole so have just ordered another one.

The thing is, do I buy another dunlop (well goodyear) sp sport maxx tyre or replace the 2 fronts with something else.

I haven't really had a problem with the dunlops but they are £130 fitted with a C wet, C fuel rating and a 68dB noise level which is low.

Dont know what to do for the best

Being so new I would just replace that one tyre with the same and get your money's worth out of them [emoji106]

I might just replace the 4 and sell the 3 good ones as they have only done 5000 miles

You could do yes as long as you don't lose out [emoji106]

As you need to replace one anyway, I'd replace the 2 across the axle and get something other than Dunlop. The Dunlops are fine grip wise, they are just so bloody noisy.

Barum Bravuris (made by Continental in th Czech Republic) is my go-to tyre of choice, or Michelin energy savers for max fuel economy. The latter is available at good prices from Costco.

Looked at michelin pilot sport 3 but michelin dont seem to do a lot in 215/40/17. Good tyres tho

From Blackcircles Circa £65 each fitted, plus other benefits

Dunlop SP Sport BluResponse

or

GOODYEAR EFFICIENTGRIP PERFORMANCE

Fuel efficiency B

Wet A

Noise 67Db

(both same manufacturer)

I have been running Goodyear tyres for last  year on two cars and they are excellent, very confident feel in wet/cornering (my highest criteria)

OOPS!! ;<)

realised that are my 185/60/15 size

Very good tyres, shame about the limited size options.

Barum Bravuris 3HM are available in your size, £75.57 a corner fitted (via Tyre-shopper.co.uk)

The Contis are great on the Sport and very quiet but they're expensive [emoji107]

The Dunlops on the loan car I had were terrible. So noisy [emoji57]

I've heard some very good reports about these tyres, a colleauge at work swears by them

I've been using Barum Bravuris tyres for the last 8 years across my C4 and Rover 75 - can't fault them - quiet, grippy, good in the rain, and affordable. Also not rock hard cheap rubber like that found in most Chinese and South American tyres. Same softer rubber compound as used by Conti in its own-brand tyres.

That's useful to know. I've never heard of them until now.

Had Barum's not only from CZ manufacture but also Conti's factory in Portugal and like their Uniroyal brand I prefer them to the parent company's so called premium tyres.

OEM Conti premium contact 2 are great in 215/40R17 - quiet and long lasting.

The Dunlop sp sportmaxx option are notoriously noisy (see tyrereviews.co.uk) - that 68db fiigure cannot be correct surely?

Edited by camelspyyder

Have quite the opposite opinion of the Conti Premium Contact 2, had them as factory OEM tyres on a few cars and all have suffered uneven wearing from the 6-5mm point, even had a set that lost there shape and though the wheels out of balance.

Mind not a fan of the Dunlop either, prefer the Goodyear but Skoda rarely fit them these days.

There might be something in what Chris has said about Barum tyres (and others) as they are made by Continental ref below from WHICH Magazine.

Car tyres Continental The low-down on Continental

Continental is well known across Europe. This German giant also makes tyres under the names, Barum, Mabor, Semperit, Uniroyal and Viking.

If the top-rated tyre brands are beyond your purse, you'll need to know which of the rest you can trust. Some of the lesser known brands offer perfectly acceptable tyres, while others miss the mark completely and could lead you to losing control when it matters most.

We've been rating tyres for many years, so we know a bit about each of the makers and what makes them tick. Here we give the low-down on Continental, to help you pick the best tyre brand for you. Armed with this information, you should check out our latest tyre test results covering over 100 tyres in eight sizes, to pick the best specific tyres for your car. And most of the big names also manufacture winter tyres. Check out our winter tyre guide to find out whether they might be for you.

Continental Brand profile

Continental is one of Europe’s most prominent tyre makers. It also owns other reasonably well-known brands like Uniroyal and Semperit, plus a host of lesser-known mid-range and economy brands like Barum, Mabor and Viking.

Continental tyres are relatively expensive to buy, but they are offered by most high street and online retailers. Its latest iteration of designs is tagged with a five (for example the Continental EcoContact5).

Price band: High

Pros and cons

+ Excellent dry grip
+ Very good wet grip
+ Widely available
- Relatively expensive to buy

semperit-223906.jpg
Semperit Brand profile

Semperit is owned by Continental, and its tyres are moderately priced, but unlike parent company Continental’s tyres, they aren’t widely available. Try independents and online retailers for the one you want.

Price band: Middle

Pros and cons

+ Very good dry handling, good dry grip
+ Good wet grip and handling
- Not widely available

uniroyal-223911.jpg
Uniroyal Brand profile

Uniroyal tyres are priced in the mid-range, which could be good news if you have to replace all four tyres in one go. However, availability tends to be a problem – you may need to search independents and online retailers to find the Uniroyal tyre size you need.

Price band: Middle Pros and cons

+ Very good dry handling, good dry grip
+ Good wet grip and handling

+ Good value
- One tyre is only average for wet grip
- Not widely available

barum-223879.jpg
Barum Brand profile

Barum is one of Continental’s wholly-owned economy brands and it falls into the lowest price bracket – making it affordable for those on a limited budget. As a lesser-known brand, it is harder to find than many makes, tending to be sold by independent outlets and through some online retailers.

Price band: Low

Brand Pros and cons

+ Affordable
+ Reasonably balanced performance
- Some tyres have shown slight weakness under wet braking
- Hard to find

Has anyone ever fitted, used or heard of Nokian Zline G2 tyres. Have been told they are really good tyres in all aspects.

Any comments on them ?

Nokian are from Finland - like Nokia - so not surprisingly their winter tyres are very highly rated - go to tyrereviews.co.uk and you'll see.

The Z G2 is a max performance summer tyre that rates very highly too.

Site has consumer reports along with magazine group test results.

Scored here along with 44 other different 215/40R17 tyres:

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre-Size/17-Inch-Tyres/215-40-17-Tyres.htm

Tellingly the Dunlop SP sportmaxx comes in 30 places below the Nokian Z G2

and the Goodyear efficient grip another place below.

Cheers for that camelspyyder.

Jeez.....There's a lot of premium brand tyres in that list that look like they are falling well short of the mark,  even against medium and budget tyres.

Does this show that yes ! you are paying for a name ?
