noise when shutting door

Featured Replies

Hi guys hope it's not a daft question but when shutting car door (more so rear drivers side) a rattle type noise can be heard almost like a flap opening and closing in quick succession. Any ideas?

Car is a FL mkll MY10

Thanks

Now this is interesting, My car does the very same thing!... All the doors shut with a lovely "thud" but the rear drivers side one, its shuts great but you do hear a slight rattle sounds like from underneath by the rear wheel, Nothing is heard from any of the other doors or boot lid.

Assumed it must be a heatshield, or something......

Your right about where the noise seems to be coming from.. hopefully someone can advise on what it is

ooooh mine does the same, I get a rattle that sound like it comes from under the side bit of the rear bumper....

LOL that's 3 people now and on different cars, Which means it must be the same component / Thingy that's causing it.................

............................. Anyone Else? :D

Happens to my Scout but it is passenger side rear door and rattle sounds like it's behind rear quarter or bumper just in front of the rear light cluster. Never could work out what it was.

There's a flap by the real wheel arch on the off-side that seems to serve no purpose that I can tell. It's a one way flap (outwards). Almost like a system to get water out of the hull of a sailing dinghy but not back in again.

I can't recall if there was one on the near side as well... Sorry. And mine was a pre-FL estate, but I can't see the FL being different in this respect.

It may be that moving to let air out as the pressure builds up inside the vehicle as you close the door.

Try leaving one door or a window open and then closing the door to see if you still hear the noise.

Although I can't say that I ever noticed any noise.

Tried closing the rear drivers side door whilst leaving another open and your right tbere was no rattle noise. Certainly seems like a flap of some sort . The annoying thing is it has only in the last couple of months starting doing this.

Rear brake stone guard?

Aluminium guard oxidises around the bolts and eventually comes loose and rattles around, can't fall off.

Sounds like a dustbin lid.

Give 'em a prod with your finger, if they move there is your culprit.

Mine does this too. Assumed it was some sort of heatshield or something.

Anyone managed to fix this? Mine has rattled for months but I haven't got round to fixing it. For the record I hear an annoying tinny rattle every time I close the boot or rear passenger side door. My car is a 2006 vRS estate. Noise seems to come from the rear near side somewhere beneath the door.

It's the cabin ventilation flap valve.

If you didn't have one the fan would just pressurise the cabin instead of flowing air in, through and out the flap valve.

Try the fan on max with an air freshener in the cabin and let your nose locate the external flap.

Thanks MicMac. I will check. Any tips on how to stop the rattle (if at all possible)?

What about stones and debris caught in the under tray.

Mine did this it was those silly plastic clip's on the exhaust heat shield...a few day's later my rear driver's disc shield came off.

So id say a mix of the 2.

There is a drain hole at the bottom of the door closed to the door joint side if this hole is blocked then you will hear a rattle sound from water accumulations inside the door just clean the drain hole using a screw driver

The 'flap' sound. This ^^^^^^^^^^^^

The rattle though, not sure.

The rattle is coming from a loose heat shield that covers the cat. Some of the clips have come off. Need new clips.

All cars have vents on the back of the vehicle behind the bumper and when a door is closed the pressure is released through these vents to the outside which could be the flaps opening and closing and this is what a lot of you may be hearing
