Rear wheel hub rust mark

Featured Replies

Dose any members have issue with rear wheel hub rust mark? Bought the car in June. Should my warranty cover it?

It's not a warranty issue. It's common across loads of manufacturers,

This seems to be asked quiet a lot, they answer is that they will all rust eventually. Solid metal disk and water=rust, law of physics. The pain applied to the hub during the brake disk manufacture is only to protect it during storage and will eventually burn off.

Now you can try and remedy the situation temporarily. Remove wheel and lightly sand away the rust, then use a rust inhibiting paint over the hub surface. This will stop the rust for a short while, but it will return.

It's probably that what you are looking at is not the rear hub, but is in fact the inner part of the disc . Disc brakes are made with high iron content, this can be seen as rust when they get wet, even after a few hours. Disc inners are coated to prevent this, but inevitably some corrosion will eventually show. At the end of the day, they are a wear and tear replaceable item, so are not covered by warranty unless they are faulty

also the quenching effect of a hot disc contacting water will induce surface rust quickly too,as said above they are soft cast iron composition, having said that it wouldnt take much for the manufacturer to give tham a more durable finish, my 12month old vrs is pretty bad with it as is my wife's 2 yr old monte carlo

It happens on my old 2005 Fabia VRS.

I change discs and pads every 2 - 3 years cheap enough DIY job..

Most of the braking takes place at the front, so not a major issue, rust is just a cosmetic appearance only.

Brush and clean the rust then apply Hammerite 'Smooth Silver' paint and they'll look good again

If you see a brake disc in the wild, without a car attached, it's shaped like a straw boater. The surface corrosion in in your photos is on the "crown" bit, where the brake pads work on the "rim". It may not happen to your face (they may be professional and just say "this is not covered") but you will be mocked by the dealership staff for even raising it.

Yes - it's not pretty, and many manufacturers don't put any corrosion protection on those surfaces at all. Skoda does (Geomet-D I think) but it doesn't deal well with road salt and with lightly used disks where they don't get covered in brake dust which is what you see with older cars. It's only a cosmetic issue - not structural at all.

Yep they are steel painted with a thin coat of anti rust paint (bit like hammerite). They all go eventually. If it puts your mind at rest my dads £38k M135i has rusty hubs so its definitely not a VAG specific issue.
