Featured Replies

Hi,

i have an early vrs skoda..i know there are lots of threads about the oil levels, replacement engines ect ... mine has starship mileage due to travelling with work all over Europe. My problem is the oil changing and orange light i get every 3 months or so.. i do around 170 miles a week in it as well so im not sure how much it should be burning? i check the oil but i have had the light on twice and because i keep oil in boot i just top up as required then check it once ive got to my destination and then again when cold in morning. Should the engine burn lots of oil? especially if i do lots of miles? also total confusion with what oil i should be putting in? currently using fully synthetic 5w/30 but castrol recommend edge 0w-40 A3/B4 ... hallford say 5w/30... phoning my local garage says 5w/40... fully synthetic...which one? also advised to use castrol edge 5w/40 ... if i am changing oil what one is better? and is it ok to continue putting in the 5 30 as a top up? please be kind....

170 miles a week x 3 months to oil light and a litre top up, means a litre every 2040 miles..... which isnt too bad to be fair, I would suggest that would pass an official oil burning test easily! just keep an eye on your spark plugs getting ashed up, I'd change them every 10k. any of the oil weights you stated would be fine as long as they meet VAG 505 spec if you are changing every 10k or 502 spec if you are going longer.... personally I use 5W40 (502), and find it burns a bit less than 5W30 , 40 means its a bit thicker at higher temps (I do a lot of track days)

you say startship mileage? how much? you may have the highest miler we have seen! ;)

These engines get really hot - 5W40 is the best option.

5w30 castrol is what's recommended. VW 504 or 507 spec.

I've been wanting to try something different, comma do a 5w50 Motorsport oil, wonder how that would fare

Yup castrol 5w30 for me also. 3 litres in just over 7000 miles. Not too bad I guess.

Recently refilled with Shell Helix Ultra ECT. Seems to be doing the job.
