movement in tailgate

Featured Replies

Hi there I've been trying to locate a noise coming from the boot of my car for a while now.I took it to skoda about 6weeks ago and they couldn't here anything,I've removed the parcel shelf and the spare wheel etc,but it's still knocking. When I grab the tailgate and pull up there is a tiny bit of movement,I'm starting to think it's the tailgate that's making the knocking noise.I took it back to skoda and they said they will charge me if the tailgate needs adjusting even it's still under warranty,it's over 2 years old.Does anyone know how to adjust a tailgate.

A simple adjustment to limit movement can probably be done by unscrewing the rubber buffers slightly. Don't overdo it as the boot ,may become difficult to close.

If it's when you actually open the boot, it might be what I had recently. Have a look at the pistons holding the tailgate up, down by the front/hinge side. Mine was loose on one side so I simply had to ping off the clip, remove the piston from the tailgate, tighten the bolt which bolts into the body back up with a spanner and fit it back on, sorted and very easy!

When it comes loose, you can still open the tailgate like normal, but it makes a clunk noise as the piston goes from compressed and pushing the wobbly bolt towards the hinges to uncompressed and pushing it into a different position which it apparently doesn't like doing in a smooth movement, hence the clunk. :)

Suprised they're thinking of charging you if it's still under warranty, as that's exactly what the warranty should be covering! I had one or two alignment issues while I still had my warranty valid and no-one ever questioned bringing it in to be worked on!

They said they only do adjustments upto six months.

The clunk happens when I go over bumps in the road.

I'd be looking at other dealers if I was you! The dealer near my work never had a problem with this sort of thing but they've changed hands a little while ago and they now do less of this goodwill type stuff, they said to me that they have had to really tighten up on warranty work, unfortunately. Customers don't seem so important nowadays. :(

While I agree with the last point, have you had any work done on the suspension lately? I ask as I had a similar clunk which I thought was the boot lid but it turned out to be a loose-ish nut on the shock absorber. It hadn't been tightened properly after the bump stops were changed.

You have checked in the side stowage compartments... Could be a loose oil refill bottle, first aid kit, warning triangle etc.

Try driving with the tailgate open and see if it makes a difference, open the front windows to lessen exhaust fumes being drawn in to cabin.

I can't check right now but aren't there two rubber buffers on the tailgate, one each side.

Usually they are a screw type fit so any movement in the tailgate can be adjusted out by a half turn anticlockwise at a time on the relevant side.

Fixed very simple there was 2 black adjustable clip like thingies either side of bonnet.

Bonnet? Or boot?

Must be my incoherent Scottish accent. Glad you got boot/bonnet/hood/trunk fixed possibly as I suggested a couple of days ago.
