Spare wheel wanted

Featured Replies

My VRS has no spare wheel and just has the puncture repair kit with the compressor to pump it up.  I see there is a spare wheel well (full size?)  So my question is what do I get to use?  Options are a spacesaver an 18" Neptune to match the rest or any second hand alloy or steel that would fit.  Any ideas as to what is the best/easiest option?

As it would only ever be used in an emergency to return toe car home or to a repair then appearance isn't a concern.

Any help appreciated.

Just spoke to the dealer and they say they don't do a space saver but will do a full size steel with tyre at discount so that is what I shall do.

If it's a MKII Vrs you can get a 16 steel rim and fit a 205/55/16 tyre

Same rolling circumference as a 225/40/18

But will that clear the calipers on the vrs?

Oh and having visited the dealer today they don't do a spare wheel of any sort for the Octavia.  That is despite the fact that they told me they did an hour earlier!  So I think it is any old wheel from a scrappy but I was thinking of buying a spare set of 18" for winter tyres (next year now) and I could keep one of them in the boot as a spare.

If it's a MKII Vrs then yes, the 16" VAG steel wheel will fit over the Standard  Calipers fitted to the Vrs. I ran 16" rims with winter tyres on my MKII Vrs.

If you get a spare from the factory it's a 16" steel wheel

OK thanks for that. I shall now go back to fleabay and look for 16".

Have you tried putting the road wheel/tyre off the car, into the wheel well?

If it fits buy an identical wheel and tyre.

If it won't fit, suggest as stated above, space saver steel wheel with narrow width tyre.

Daft thing is I have a set of four 16" alloys of my Volvo V50 that I part.exed for the VRS that are on winter tyres and they are sat in the yard doing nowt!  Can't see them fitting though.

A 18" rim will fit in to the wheel well but as the tyre is wider the boot carpet will not sit flush to the floor, the best thing is a 16" steel wheel fitted with a 205/55/16 tyre

the wheels need to be 5 X 112, think the ceter hole is 57.1mm but not sure on the ET.  Look on the wheels to see what the size is, should be stamped on the back somewhere

The spare wheel that comes from the factory is ET50.

Edit: and 6.5J wide

Thanks Guys I will clean the old ones off tomorrow because they are minging (they are winter wheels) and see what it says on them.  I am tempted just to buy a set of four wheels and if they are scabby have them refurbed in antracite.

One thing I cannot get my head around is this business about clearing the caliper with the wheel weights as I was reading a thread yesterday (can't recall which one) that was saying 17" wouldn't fit but maybe that was on a series III.

Once again thanks for your help.

Regards Chris

17" wheel would foul the front callipers on a vRS MKIII but OK on a MKII.  I use 17x7 ET45 wheels on my vRS MkII FL as winter wheels.  There is a picture on the forum in one of the winter wheels/tyres threads.

Remember that if you have a different size wheel/tyre as a spare you are legally limited to 50mph if you need to fit to the car after a puncture.

I have used the spare 16" steel wheel with a 205/55 tyre on the front of my car and it fitted with no fouling.

Thanks for that.  I shall have a look at that now.

not quite.  officially 17s fit over the front caliper but some are smaller inside than others and a couple of people have reported that once balanced the weights just grazed the calliper.  So 17s can be very tight, but I've not heard of any that are definitely NOT good.

Update.  As I have purchased a fantastic set of 18" Zeniths off RichC of this parish I am now sorted with a spare.  Thanks to everyone for their help.  Just need to buy a cheap scissor jack now and decide if I want a new boot insert or just bin the other one and just use the hole that is left.
