Power Outlet/Cigar Lighter

Featured Replies

Living in the USA I can't look at an Octy Estate to see where the power oulets are! I want to bring a unit to connect my iPod to the car and the best one fits into the power outlet with a wireless connection to the radio. However the unit is approx 4 inches long and I don't know where the power oulet is and whether there is space.

Can anyone advise me please - photo would be even better. Strangely the brochure has no indication where the power outlets are, or if there are more than one.

Thanks

Aft of the gear lever next to the cup holders (sorry for the ship reference' date=' you know what I mean).

Thanks - is it the round thingy (with chrome Surround) on the right or the darker round thing in the middle?

It's the round thing with the chrome and green surround and the picture of a cigarette on it on the right.

Thanks - it looks like there should be no problem because there is plenty of height above and room around the outlet to fit the connector. I have to buy in the USA because I believe iPod wireless connectors are unavailable in the UK because they contravene some law or other - but then what doesn't contravene some law or other in UK!!

Very often they're not UK-originated laws, just some wretched European imposition; there's no shortage of them as you'll be discovereing.

but then what doesn't contravene some law or other in UK!!

...becoming a Member of Parliament, duct taping a satsuma in your mouth, putting a bin bag on your head and tying your neck to the door handle of you hotel bedroom.....but then again MP's make the laws.....

Hi - quite simply the iPod wireless adaptors are illegal under the Wireless Telegraphy Act as they transmit a signal on the VHF Band 2 FM broadcast band - which the user will not hold a licence to do so!!

This is not some beauracatic EU rule, in fact it is a UK regulation - it is there so that we can all use various wireless devices and in harmony without suffering undue interference from unplanned and unauthorised transmissions!

End of Rant :)

John.

Give me a break! There are thousands of these things being used every day in the USA (and I suspect in the UK) without any problem. These things are extremely low powered and have a tiny range of a few metres at most.

After living in the USA for 10 years I understand the fundamental difference in attitudes in that in the USA the view is basically - 'Yes you can' and in UK (and Europe) it's 'No you can't', generally because some busybody or other will have regulated it like the size of Apples you can sell or the straightness of bananas!

I though the US was more "do that and i'll sue you".

Surprisingly no, much less suing in general public than popularly believed in UK. Companies and major class action suits are different but most normal people carry on much as in UK.

I've seen the radio tranmitters for sale on ebay but by all accounts the sound quality isn't to great. I've fitted a Dension Ice-link to connect my ipod up to my stream. Sound quality is as good as from cd, it keeps the ipod charged and you can use the steering wheel controls to skip forward and backwards through album tracks.

You are right but by fitting the Denison the CD multichanger is disables and my SO insists on having her CD's so it's not an option.

Now if only Skoda fitted a simple Aux in socket like on the Ford Mondeo, I can't believe that would be a difficult mod for Skoda and now that iPods are so popular I am amazed an Aux in socket isn't standard on every car. Of course BMW's here have a system where you plug in your iPod and all controls are available from the steering wheel and details are visible on the radio display. Now that's what we want!!

Totally agree. We spend 3 weeks every year in small town eastern USA, and IMHO the US people have a lot of what we've lost recently. They still value their communities, and wouldn't dream of banning their flag from buildings, clothes or vehicles. Probably lynch any councillor that suggested such an idea!! Pity they don't use Skoda autos as rental cars yet though - or do they?

Unfortunately not! You will get a USA major manufacturers car - GM, Ford or possibly Chrysler. Don't forget that European cars are premium machines in the USA. The 17,000 pounds you pay for a "good" car in UK will buy you a top-of-the-range US car ($30,000). You could easily get a Jag for that or a Lexus or Acura or.........., all well equipped.

Downside of cheaper US cars you will rent (10,000 pounds) is lower specs - anti-lock brakes, multi air-bags etc. are all extras and the suspension and roadholding will be well below European standards. Fine for US open roads but not for spirited B road driving.

My last one was a Stratos 2.4 coupe - bit like driving a streamlined truck, but okay for 3 weeks - glad to get back to my old vRS though!

Quality of sound from FM transmitters is quite acceptable for the car environment. You can't tell the difference when driving compared to the car's CD player. Remember, the car is not you sitting room. There's too much ambient noise to make it worth while tryig to achieve the same quality levels. Shame they're illegal.

Not necessarily so.....

When last in Florida my rental car was Japanese, can't remember which make, but it was a delight not to have a wallowing Yank beastie.

Correct - two years ago I had a brand new Toyota Corolla - didn't look great but drove lovely.

In the past I've also had a Hyundai Accent coupe and a Mitsubishi - I think the latter was called Prestige or something. I'd like to get my hands on a V6 Altima one day.

You always have the single cd player in the head unit if you need to play cd's in the car.

If everytning else fails that's the way I will go - but I will try the FM transmitter system first and post the results here - if it is of any interest to anyone?

Dealer has confirmed that my new Octy (L&K Estate) has arrived and should be ready for me to pick up when I get back to UK.
